3D Studio Max........... again??
« on: February 10, 2004, 01:28:04 pm »
Ok, someone should know this... Using Max 6 here but the problem comes when I export my model.  How come when I export it as a 3DS file it imports into Milkshape all over the place.  Everthing is rotated correctly (bar the 90 degree one) but all the bits of my model are just scattered liberally about... I mean, what's the point of aligning it all nicely in max just to have to do it all again in Milkshape... I know there is a really easy answer for this and I'm just overlooking something but can someone point out what for me....?

Cheers in advance

It may be that you need to "join" all of your meshes into one - I ran into that problem while exporting to DirectX, you might have something similar going on there.

Understood, but if I boolean everthing together it'll create errors in the mesh.... I really need to know as it's getting to the stage where my Chandley Project will start to slow down... hehe

And we dont want that...!!

Well I dont anyway

Dont Boolean just attach them together and then export everything.

Ok, I might be sounding like an idiot here but what do you mean by "attach"???

Select a part of your mesh, i.e. saucer; then, depending on the location in max6 (I use 5), scroll down the modify panel until you see the attach button...click it, then select the part you want attached, such as the neck...it should now be one part. The attach button should be selected still, and you can keep clicking all the items until everything is attached together. Or, if it's available, there will be a button next to attach called attach list and a little button with a page icon...click that and you'll have a window open that lists every part you've made and you can select "all" then "select" and it'll be one mesh. That should take care of the problem. Also, when you boolean the mesh, you can attach the pieces, then in vertex edit mode, select the vertices where the boolean occured, weld at .01, then in the flyout window, hit "smooth" chk auto smooth and it'll wipe out those errors...or at least usually. Hope this helps.

Yes, the "Attach" or "Attach List" button is in the right side stack when you go into "Edit Mesh"...sorry about the mis-use of terms, I'm also a bit of a beginner at Max
