Request computer advice....
« Reply #20 on: February 02, 2004, 11:01:40 pm »
I own a PC.  Hell, I own *5* PC's.  Over the past 2 weeks, however, I've had my first run-in with TECH SUPPORT FROM HELL.

See, I bought my sister an HP pc because her other machine's a POS and I had a card and she didn't.  She used it for just under 2 months when the hard disk died.  Soooo.. I call HP for support, hoping for an easy fix, but little did I know I was about to come head to head with one of those companies that outsource their tech support to foreign lands such as India.  Anyway, after 4 calls and 4 different people, I'm about fed up.  If they don't send me the box to ship the broken PC to them by Thursday, I'm taking it back and getting my money back.  After the runaround for service, I'm not doing business with HP anymore.

So here's my question:

How would a 1GHz eMac with 1 GB of RAM perform with a Windows emulator, and would SFC run satisfactorily on it?  SFC is the only reason I own a PC in the first place.

It wouldn't so far.

I understand that DeathMerchant is working on Getting a reliable game with SFC on a Linux Box, But no support with MAC.

also Did you have to ship the whole box, or was you able to get an RMA for the HD from where you bought the machine?

If this is a Pavilion box, odds are that partsdirect does not even have the info the H.D. in thier system.

Many, far to many times I would have to ship a box back, get a REFURB,a crappy one at that, and give that back to a customer for a bad power supply, or even just a bad case fan. Really rather sad.

In that case I hope the box doesn't come so that I can return it, get my money back, and order a Mac and play SFC on sis's old WinME system.

Seriously, if I don't get this system back, it's going straight back and I refuse to pay for it.

If you want the same system back that you ship them then I suggest you call them before you ship it off. Once they get it into thier RMA dept they lose all track of it. Standard HP Warranty for consumer level computers is to fix at a repair shop(if the store can get the parts to fix it with) or replace with a same model, or comparable model, Refurb. Not "all" of hp computers are like this just the vast majority of the consumer level stuff.

Have you looked to see if there is a HP repair shop nearby? Heck if ya give me the model number that's right next to the serial number on the back ,I should be able to tell ya if they would be able to repalce the H.D. or if it can only be swapped whole unit.

part number is DK282-69001
This is a 80 Gb 5400 RPM drive yuck...

Anyways a hp repair center should be able to replace the H.d. on this system. It is available, the drive itself will be a refurb however, but at least the whole system will not be a refurb.

How long do refurb drives last?  Something tells me it's a small number

Well with the hp they will cover the drive for 90 days or what ever is left of the current warrenty, whichever will last longer.

But I have no way of knowing what brand of HD you may get back or what you even have now. I fyou have a Maxtor you may get back a WD who knows. But it should be a 80 GB 5400 RPM. And it may not be a refurb, but odds are that it will be. HP has had 80- GB drives out like that for al ong time, so they should have a good RMA pile of them.

When I looked online for support for this model, one of the FAQ's was, "What is S.M.A.R.T. and what does it mean when it detecs a failure?"... or something like that.  If that's a Frequently Asked Question, then I think they might have an issue with substandard parts.
