i was wondering about the excelsior class, under the hull on the tail there kinda cannon, what are theyand in sfcop what type of weapon are they?

Ya, I think its pretty much given by most people that those are probably Photon Lauchers.  Lakota probaby had them refitted for Quantums later.

They are actually waste disposal tubes. Back b4 particle dissolution techniques had been invented (TNG), transporter recycling (TMP) had been used to break down waste into reusable forms for all sorts of ships systems from water, manufacturing, clothes, food, etc (gross)... But there were some forms that went out the waste tubes. Thats what those were...

Of course they are photon launchers to us. Why would we want them to be waste disposal tubes? But they are.

  Haven't you guys heard? Waste disposal tubes are the super-secret weapon! Excellent for clogging up weapons ports, blocking viewscreens, and generally distracting your enemy.

Yes, that is one of the downsides of the "secret weapon." It only fires directly aft. It also doesn't affect Klingons, who seem to WANT to be hit with the "secret weapon."
