Does anyone know anything about Win iPods?
« on: January 26, 2004, 11:34:15 am »
I am thinking about buying an iPod when I noticed there is a Win (only) version and a Win/Mac version. The Win only version is much more expensive than the Win/Mac version. Does anyone know why? Does the win only version work better with PC's???

Thank you for your help!

the older versions were for mac only but could be made to work with Windows using certain software. I have read that this wasn't the best though. Apple has since come out with newer versions in Mac and Windows versions. these newer models should be the same price. At least I've never seen them at different price for the same model.

Windows connectivity was originally done through MusicMatch (that was bundled w/ Windows iPods). Apple now has iTunes (free download) for Mac & PC, so you don't need MusicMatch.

If you have a firewire card, any iPod will work. Even if you have USB only, any new iPod is fine.

Where are you seeing Win (only) versions? Older used iPods on eBay? Apple is selling iPods with no platform distinction.

IMHO, you should buy only a new iPod. The condition of the battery of a used iPod is always in doubt.

Amazon.com listed the Win only version for $50 more than the same size Win/Mac version which got me wondering.

Thanks for the help!

The new iPods come with a firewire docking station.  If you only have USB, you have to purchase the optional Dock-to-USB cable for $20.

BTW the USB cable will NOT work with a Mac.  The USB solution is for Windows only.

Is that not the "PC FireWire adapter" listed with all new iPods at the Apple Store?

No.  Unless your PC has a firewire port, you need to either order the PCI firewire host adapter or the USB cable.  I ordered my iPod back in December and it only came with a Dock-to-Firewire cable (which is also used to connect the iPod to the AC adapter).  Since my PC already had a firewire port, I did not need to order anything extra.
