Q: Is it tough to get an internship at Microsoft? It looks like a cool place to work for the summer. - S.R., Hampton

A: It is extremely tough. Microsoft Corp., a Redmond, Wash. company that develops, manufactures, licenses and supports a wide range of software products, has been referred to in the computer science world as the "Emerald City of internships."

The company receives thousands of resumes for internships and brings in around 800 paid college interns for the summer.

Landing a Microsoft internship is a rigorous process. Intern applicants who make the first cut go through an interview on campus with a recruiter, and final candidates are invited to Redmond for a round of interviews at the company.

Interns receive subsidized housing, a competitive salary and access to company social events. Deep discounts are provided on Microsoft software and hardware. Interns can spend up to $350 per year on Microsoft products at the Microsoft store and pay employee prices.

Nearly all employees, including interns, have their own office to decorate as they please and work hours are flexible.

According to the Microsoft Web site, interns stay for a minimum of 12 weeks - long enough to work on a project and make a significant contribution to the company.

For more information on an internship with Microsoft, go to www. microsoft.com/college/intern or write Microsoft Corporation,

1 Microsoft Way, Ste. 303, Redmond, WA 98052-8303, ATTN: Recruiting.
