OP+3.2: Announcing its release.
« on: January 18, 2004, 06:13:45 am »
Well, it's time to deliver. There is still some more work I can do to refine this mod  further, but I can release what I have right now safely and justly. OP+ version 3.2 has been brewing for some months and is now available for download.

(For those who don't get it, this is a mod for SFC:OP)..

In a nutshell, you can download the mod from these following links:
OP+ 3.2 with models:  http://klingon.stasis.ca/OP_plusrefit/opplus_32_models.exe  (43.4mb)
OP+ 3.2 without models:  http://klingon.stasis.ca/OP_plusrefit/opplus_32_no_models.exe  (250kb)

Additional information:
Changes from version 3.1 to 3.2:  http://klingon.stasis.ca/OP_plusrefit/changes_from_3.1_to_3.2.txt
Compare.txt between version 3.1 and 3.2, implicitely:  http://klingon.stasis.ca/OP_plusrefit/compare_from_3.1_to_3.2.txt

Compare.txt between original OP 2552 shiplist and OP+ shiplist 3.2 :  http://klingon.stasis.ca/OP_plusrefit/compare.txt

Main website:  http://klingon.stasis.ca/OP_plusrefit/

The installer available now uses a new form of compression called LZMA which is about 20% better than bzip2 to compress packages. Instead of being as large as 60MB, the installer for the models version of OP+ 3.2 is only 43.4MB in size.

I hope you enjoy this mod and check out the website for more details. All the information you may need could already be posted there.

Oh, and I almost forgot.
Quote:

The original SFC:OP shiplist has 2370 ship entries.
The OP Plus Refit 3.2 shiplist has 5435 ship entries.

Most of the additions are "general" units players wouldn't be using as fighting ships. In other words, these units are bases, or freighters, etc. These will help increase the fun of playing on D2 or with single-player campaigns. Many models had
to be created to suit these ships, all of which I've created myself. With any luck, the DIP people will use this to improve their own shiplist project.

PS: I plan a revised edition of OP+32, eventually. It would use the exact same shiplist files, but I am going through the process of reviewing each and every one of the models, making sure they have LODs (Levels of Details) to ease off on CPU usage when playing with this mod. This will take time. A lot of time. But based on what I saw tonight while playing the game on my laptop, it does help.

Thanks!

Hopefully your shiplist will become the default for future servers... that would be great!  Not to mention all the playtesting it would recieve.  Thanks again for all your hard work!

No.. sorry.

.. in fact, let me make a point here about models to everyone:
.. 3.2 wants 3.1 to be uninstalled to continue. I suggest you download the models as you normally would, but to first backup your version of OPPLUS/MODELS ... .. uninstalling 3.1 will erase the entire opplus/ directory (to return SFC:OP to the state it was before OPPLUS install)
.. installing 3.2 will recreate it. Besides, I did so much model work, you want the models.

.. once 3.2 is installed, you can start plugging in your models just like before. Sorry if it caused anyone trouble.

Must add a thanks to this thread. I am well aware this has been a lot of time consuming work and many of us consider it to be one of the most fun mods out for SFC. That's what makes it so successful... increased fun factor! There are other specification mods being done but yours has become the defacto choice with no slight towards any of the other shiplist projects.

Again a harty thanks for the effort.

I really like the idea of move civilian ships.

Thanks for the dedication and helping make OP the best SFC available.

this is a post over in gz's sfc op forum..maybe you can reply to it for strat

I have to update the specs chooser code. I won't be able to do this for some time.

Try this for a temporary solution.
1) Load the OP+ 3.1 Shiplist with the SFC:OP Shiplist Chooser 4.2.5
2) Uninstall OP+ 3.1 (Do this step only if you have OP+ 3.1 installed)
3) Load 'Other Mod' with the SFC:OP Shiplist Chooser 4.2.5
4) Install OP+ 3.2

Try this, the shiplist chooser should store the OP+ 3.2 lists in the Other Mod directory. The only way this won't work is if the new version of OP+ 3.2 has a new model.siz file.

Much of this I have to test, and I may not be able to for the better part of the day.

If someone else can find the time to test out this temporary solution, I'm sure it would be appreciated by much of the community.

It does, as new entries have been created, and old entries have been amended.

I've prepared a new no_models installer this morning, fixing a couple of issues around missing models.
If you use the no_models, I suggest you download this one and reinstall the shiplist and models.

Pest: yes, that means you're going to have to make new installers again. :P~

I was not quite certain about how you meant to proceed and would appreciate some clarification.  (I just finished making sure everything was set up, oh well it happens and everything else is excellent, really like that new f-ca hull.)  Do you mean uninstall everything do the new no model3.2  then the model 3.2 or did you mean we could overinstall over 3.2 models but have copied the shiplist and then just put back in after doing the overinstall?  I have a suspicious feeling that it is the former  though.  Thank you for getting it fixed so quickly.

If you see the new F-CA, you're using the "WITH" models pack, so you're fine. There are a couple of errors in the "WITHOUT" models pack, aka no_models. Those of you using that, I suggest downloading the version of the no_models installer currently up on my site, and installing it instead of the one I originally released. THAT means you'll have to uninstall your current version first.

I hope this helps ..

A new opplus_32_no_models.exe installer has been generated. Enhancements include sanity checks and error popup messages when something seems wrong during models install/copy. No fixes were applied to the models themselves. Fetch and reinstall with this installer if you have any problems with past incarnations of the no_models installer.

Hi, Luc!

I'm on the ADB staff and will be writing the SFC article for CL28 this May.

I'm going to be concentrating on non-Taldren enhancements to SFC-OP, so your
OP+ Refit package is going to get a prominent mention. I'm writing this
email just to ask if that's OK with you; I'll want to mention the URL of
your website, and if you're having problems with bandwidth usage or whatnot
I don't want to make them worse.

Thanks!

Actually, there has been an SFC column in CL since SFC1 came out. Just not much "meat" in it, which I'm planning to fix this time around.

What I'm planning for CL28 is to cover the "third-party add-ons" as best I can; Luc's OP+ will not be the only thing mentioned. Scripts and mission stuff, ship mods, links to some of the download sites, the GAW project, and so forth. General notes on installation for newbies as well. More links.

I've got a couple months to write this article, so I'm willing to listen to suggestions, requests, and attempts at bribery.

Rod O'Neil's PF and Fighter mods are candidates..
NuclearWessel's missionpacks
Karnak's missions..
Chris Jones' work (although he's moved on to other things, it seems)
MagnumMan's CoopAce (I've been doing this since v2.2, publishing via MagnumMan's site for authenticity)

.. also.. something that could probably interest you is knowing that the EAW single-player campaigns *have* been recompiled for SFC:OP. (I did that myself.) .. also.. they can be mixed with NW's missions if you want to have a *really* challenging single-player game, and this does not exclude shiplist mods.

.. and for this mix, I recommend Pestalence's OP_Enhancement installer packs. He combines my work with other people's in a single large installer.

Might this qualify?

SFB OP Mod '03b - New and Improved!

Laid the groundwork for other Fighter/PF mods... Still somewhat of a WIP but functional as is and enjoyed quite a bit by some. I intend to polish it eventually.

It is based on Gman's old SFB_OP shiplist, which is what Chris Jones used in his UltimateTOS mod for OP, I did the same but recompiled the models from the original sources unmodified and completed the job of making fighters and PFs flyable along with many other changes and improvements.

It is intended to play more like SFB, which it does.

Would it count? Well ... kinda.

If you step back for a moment and assume that anyone who is just now learning to install mods and scripts and things is a newbie, then ... it's probably a bad idea to tell them about incomplete and/or WIP projects they can't figure out.

I will definitely take a look at it; I'm a "Fed with PFs" player myself. No promises, though.

This mod is simple to manage. Download the installer form fileplanet and the update from prohosting as linked on the thread referenced above. Install the mod then install the update. (i.e double click the executables) When finished evaluating the mod uninstall with the shortcut created on your start menu or through the add/remove programs in the control panel. It is quite simple. Perhaps I led you astray a bit... in my opinion SFB_OP_03b is more complete than Chris Jones Ultimate TOS mod for OP and is simpler to install. Thanks for taking a look, and I don't expect anything.

P.S. If you're a "Fed with PFs" player I'm sure you'll like this fine (especially if you know SFB and realize that Fed PFs kinda suck and that F-18s A-20s and F-111s make a superior attrition force to Fed PFs....)

 More screenshots here...

Thanks again, and good luck with your article!

WOW this is great Firesoul !!!!  I'm glad ADB is publishing info about SFC, your OP+ mod, and other stuff.  Bonk's work should also be included.

Maybe someday ADB can work a deal to get full fledged computerized SFB...or an SFC total conversion that gets the other races weapons and technology added.  So we can have real Tholians, Andros, Seltorians, and even the Omega races truly included.

We can only hope.

Ya, the space dragon is good nostalgic fun. It should appear in campaign monster missions now and then, or you can add them as BeastRaider AI in skirmish missions. Try the multiplayer Intruder mission for the Juggernaught. Both are flyable on the BeastRaider shiplist too...

But this is FS's OP+3.2 thread and I don't want to hijack it. I'll get back to work on my mod soon and start a new thread.

I've been downloading every version of OP+ and been playing on it since near the beginning - I think its a dang fine shiplist! Thanks for all the hard work FS, and sorry I don't have any constructive input at the moment...

Firesoul showed me the email when he first received it and was in short, quite amazed at the interest his mod garnered.  Being a long time SFB fan and occasionally gathering a CL here and there, the fact that he was approached was very humbling.

I am glad that the thousands of SFB players that read the CL will get a chance to find out what is going on in the SFC community and possibly be interested in joining the community seeing as it follows the style of play that they love.

From a small project that was to enhance personal play with friends to this, is...in short...quite an accomplishment.

Karnak: not a problem. I do have to say that I've played them myself and like them!

Everybody: I've gotten a couple of emails, so one thing I should clarify for everone: most of the people here, and on TUN, and partipicating in the other projects, and so forth and so on, all these people know about all these things that have been done (like OP+, the EEK mssions, Chris Jones works, and all the ship models that have been built). Just from posts that I read on the SFC topic within the SFB BBS, I know that there are a lot of people who have no idea whatsoever that there are neat things they can install to "enhance game play". You guys here are all in the category of knowing all about these things already, in most cases in a whole lot more detail than I know. So the article will not be of much interest to you guys.

Speaking for myself, I truly appreciate what you guys have done over the years. I don't know if all the bugs have been worked out of OP 2.5.5.2 -- although David Ferrell is clearly due some kudos -- and quite frankly I don't know how the people working on GAW are going to implement Web weapons within in the game -- which is pretty well essential for the Tholians to be a factor. Anyhow ...

The focus of the article will be to introduce newbies to the idea of going past what Taldren did ... things they can do, add-ons you guys have done, and so forth. While we're able to point out some neat stuff you guys have done, that's about it. It's still Taldren's game, and yours.

Taldren took it as far as they could, and now the fan community (that's YOU) has picked up the ball. All I intend is to put the word out to the SFB players who read CAPTAIN'S LOG and may be unaware of what they're missing.

One of the things you should encourage newbies to do........Join us online....Player Vs Player is the pinnicle of SFC....

Many of the gaming communties (for other types of games) are huge and unfriendly...looking only for the best players to hang out with...quite litterally shunning new people....

That can be very intimidating for any gaming system...and it can literly kill the love of a game like this...its a hard enough game without dealing with buttheads too...

Well....we are a different lot....we look forward to welcoming new people and helping them "get up to speed" so they can join our addiction...er community....and many people go out of their way to personaly provide training, tactics, and tricks to bring up a new players skills...want to learn how to fight a fed or klink and live to fight another day?....just ask and a klink or fed, or another racial player will spend time showing you how....I cant think of too many gamer types that will teach you how to defeat themselves....

Many of us have transended the "must win" mentality and now play for the joy of battle alone....

OP may very well be the closest we ever get to the prize(real time SFB).....but for many of us...its close enough

There are only three things one needs to join our community....

A game disk...an internet connection....and the will to learn....

Skills we can teach, tech support we got, and fun?....yeah baby we got buckets of fun!

Crimmy, what you have said concerning joining on line play speaks to people like myself. My very short on line play experience was discouraged not by the way anyone treated me but by buggy launches. The fight would start and about half the time I was unable to be launched in, leaving whoever I was flying with in a bad situation. Therefor I thought it best to not screw up other peoples fun.

If I, or other people like me, wanted to give it another shot, where is the better places to start again?

Well...the first step is to re-install

Then patch...

Then make sure your vid drivers are all current...

Make sure you have the newest version of DX...DX 9.0b (different versions of DX dont play well together....such as DX9 and DX8)...for some reason..this isnt widely known...and doesnt happen to everyone , all the time...

Dont run ANYTHING else in the backround....regiscan and systray are the only things you need running...

I play on 56k just fine....anything faster should have no problems at all...

Bottom line.....if your game plays ok "offline"...it should be ok "online".....if not....you are having a problem with interaction to other players....such as a differing DX version...or firewall...or improper ports (cable/DSL)...

Some peeps can run all kinds of stuff and have no problems...I myself cant...but I did find a stable point having all the extra stuff off when playing...

If you still cant get a stable game going...have someone go through your settings with you while on MSN....

Hope this helps.

Hi Crimmy would you like to see improvements to KE3Y Bird of Prey like a power of 25 so you can overload the torps and go to speed 20 while cloaked it would be nice would in it  the same for tinga or K7T it would be nice if that ship cloaked too sounds nice does in it .I would like  to but I do not know how to edit ships I am no computer wizzard.David Farrell told me to do it on excel but it says make a back up I am not sure how to do that.I would like to see Taldren put out shiplist editor and make it userfriendly and easy to edit and make up some of our own. What do you think pass this around to everyone on the forum if I do not get the time please.Bye the way may Klingon alter ego name is Koras and my Fed. is Mike Hanson Comes from a family of norse warriors

-- Luc
FireSoul

PS: I plan a revised edition of OP+32, eventually. It would use the exact same shiplist files, but I am going through the process of reviewing each and every one of the models, making sure they have LODs (Levels of Details) to ease off on CPU usage when playing with this mod. This will take time. A lot of time. But based on what I saw tonight while playing the game on my laptop, it does help.

No.. sorry.

.. in fact, let me make a point here about models to everyone:

Again a harty thanks for the effort.

this is a post over in gz's sfc op forum..maybe you can reply to it for strat

Hi, Luc!
I'm on the ADB staff and will be writing the SFC article for CL28 this May.

.. I rushed downstairs and picked up my CL27.. and opened the first page for the credits.

Hell.. if it gets more people to play OP, then success!

Hi Firesoul
Congratulations! I just ordered my copy of cl27 and I'll be ordering cl28 for sure now
You greatly deserve it for bringing more of the SFB universe to this community.

*toasts the players that work hard for the game they love*
