GSC or Medium carrier design idea
« on: February 20, 2003, 05:56:10 am »
Hello All
I was thinking about Fasa's Mackenzie class Frigate and the ship is too big to be a frigate in starfleet command but I was thinking of alternate roles it could play and a Galactic Survey cruiser, Medium carrier or Battle Carrier seems to be a role that this puppy could do
I did up some schematics that put standard warp engines on the ship as opposed to colony technology that this ship has.
I've sent my schematics to the schematic data base and hopefully they will go up eventually. I will be adding more schematics to the data base as time goes on

Getting these modeling guys to comment on ship ideas (other than thier own) is tricky at best. I've been trying to get an idea of mine worked on for over three years. Of course they are under no obligation to evaluate other peoples ideas let alone implement them. However it can't hurt to be persistent and continue asking. As to your carrier, I 'd prefer a different shape for the fighter bay section. Though it does have the advantage of being capacious.

Once I designed an all around ship that had a cylinder for a primary hull. It looked rather like a sledge hammer and was named after thor's hammer (Mjohlnir). In addition to huger fighter bays on either side, it had recessed rings around the head that were tracked and various weapons were mounted on cars that would allow the weapons to migrate around the circumference. The weapon modules were powered by plasma wave guides under the recessed tracks which linked to the warp engines. The upshot was that the ship had many many effectively 360 degree turrets and could apply massive firepower in almost any arc.  Much of the interior was dedicated to fighters and other tactical craft including lamphrey like hull sucking marine landing craft equipped with ring shaped arrays of fusion torches for providing access to the interior of enemy craft. These were called lamphrey class assault shuttles. The ship had A keel lengthed main gun which was a Warp augmented rapid fire rail gun of devastating power. I also had several different classes of fighter. The ship has no transporters and was (mostly) of TOS/PreTos equivalent tech levels though it was not from the trek universe nor WEGs Starwars universe it showed up in both.

Hmmm... the one thing that I'm wondering about Bernard is whether or not two engines would be able to generate a strong enough field to cover that secondary hull.. you could expand the field at the cost of a slower overall speed.. but wouldn't another or two more nacelles be a better answer?

I'm not a designer, but those nacelles look like they could use a little assist in the form of maybe a couple more nacelles, or some form of warp field stabilizer/enhancer above or below the secondary hull.

Just a thought.. again, I'm not the expert.

(I prefer my FTL ships B5-style with jumpgates anyways).

Actually, I think this design should be a Heavy Carrier or a Heavy Troop Transport.  It looks like it has even more volumn then a Heavy Crusier.  I remember in SFB, that their where Strike Carriers and Command Carriers both based on the Consitution Design.  The Strike Carriers where easier to convert from a Constitution Class ship while the Command Carriers where much harder to convert.  The Strike Carriers where limited to carring only F-18's while the Command Carriers could hold F-18's, F-14's, F-18's, and I think even A-10's.

Now I know this is a FASA ship and no relation to SFB, but I could see this as some sort of Heavy Carrier capable of carring large amounts of Fighters or maybe even some Heavy Fighters.  Heck, maybe it could be a PF Tender.

Hi Atheorhaven
Like I said I didn't design her the boys at FASA did.  I'm just trying to see if we could put her to use in the SFC Universe. You make a good point about the warp engine location, yet the Aurora class has engines that are in a similar position

My own schematic drawings of the Mackenzie has  standard pb47m3 warp engines as opposed to the engines you see
on this drawing I hope that the schematic gets uploaded to the schematic database shortly.  Thanks for your comments they are greatly appreciated
