Windows XP Home Edition: Processes - What To Shut Down?
« on: February 21, 2003, 08:54:09 am »
Ahh the mystery that is Windows XP.  Has some handy bits, and this confusing one.

Looking at Processes in Taks Manager, on Windows 98, I would shut down non-essential tasks, leaving System and Explorer as the only things running, so my PC is concentrating on my game and not be "distracted".

In XP I have the following:

taskmgr.exe
wao.exe
OSD.EXE
MagicKey.exe
realplay.exe
iexplore.exe
wanmpsvc.exe
dpnsvr.exe
SPOOLSV.EXE
EXPLORER.EXE
SVCHOST.EXE LOCAL SERVICE
SVCHOST.EXE NETWORK SERVICE
SVHOST.EXE SYSTEM
SVHOST.EXE SYSTEM
LSASS.EXE
SERVICES.EXE
WINLOGON.EXE
CSRSS.EXE
SMSS.EXE
System
System Idle Process

Can anyone tell me which items of the above, I can DO WITHOUT?  i.e. shut them down before I run my game, to maximise my PC's performance.

Thanks for any Help.

I don't have WinXP but right off the bat you have Internet explorer running and real player
realplay.exe
iexplore.exe

those 2 can be shutdown and if they are in startup you might want to take them out of there so they don't start everytime you boot.

Thanks for that.

I suppose the question isn't really what needs to be shut down, but which of the listed Processes need to be kept running.

Knowing that, I can shut everything else off.

This is a little diffent than you were asking, but it's along the same line. Go to www.blackviper.com  There are various services configurations available there for xp. It allows you to set up your pc to shutdown certain services on startup. There are 5 different configurations available, "default" (stock settings) "safe" (only shuts down services that virtually no one needs) "internet gateway" (optimizes the services needed for 56k users) "gamer" (for dsl users) "super tweak" (shuts down as many services as possible, but still allows you to run programs). On my system "safe" saves about 15meg of ram - "super tweak" saves about 50meg, when compared to the stock settings. I have these various configurations loaded on my start-up screen so I can select between them.  I think you'll find this usefull

Moofighter,

ROFLMAO

I'll take your advice, though anyone who's in the know and can tell me which ones to leave running, please do.

Allegedly that's why Jack Nicholson dropped his internet feature from his Computer.

He was quoted as saying "There was so much porn, I found myself never leaving the house".

Someone else in these forums gave this link, don't remember who or when.  Anyway, if you go  there/here  you will find the info you need.

You sure like your porn though!
