I thought maybe some of you that know more about windows xp than I do might be able to help me with this one.

Every time I take a hard drive with windows xp loaded on it and move it to a new computer this happens.

I just get a big old blue screen of death. The machine will not boot, not even in safe mode. What ends up happening is that
I have to reformat the drive and re-install xp from scratch.

I've tried doing this several times, and it always happens. In each occasion the motherboard is different on the new computer.

I am assuming this is part of the problem, but I'd think windows would come up in safe mode or that I could force it to
boot in safe mode. But even if I am lucky enough to get it to allow me to select safe mode it still craps out.

Any suggestions?

XP is based off of NT which is hardware-specific. So no that won't work.

The readers digest version of your trouble.

If the computers are not identical you are going to be looking at a BSOD.

Mother board drivers vary my board to board for starters.

The problem is that the HDD controllers are different, and this has been an issue in NT, 2000 and XP. Win9x was great, because you could port your installation to any other computer, boot it up, feed it a few driver disks and it would sort it all out by itself.

Microsoft has a program called 'SYSPREP' which you can download for free that is supposed to tell Windows 2000 & XP that it's going to go to sleep and wake up in a new computer, but I've never gotten it to work properly. I seem to remember that you had to somehow specify what HDD controller(s) it should expect to find on re-boot, but I never bothered fighting with it and always took the long road of re-installing.

Let me know if you go that route and get it to work....

Hmm...in general this seems to be a step backwards. Win98 and WIn95 didn't seem to have these migration issues.

That program you mentioned Barabbas sounds like it might have helped, thanks for the info. Its just a pity
that the old motherboard failed. Which is why I'm trying to migrate it.

It looks like I'm going to have to use Knoppix and a LAN to move the data to a network storage device and do a clean re-install of XP.

Hmmmm....I've had no troubles moving HDD's and switching motherboards with Win2K Pro.

I had problems with Win 2k a while ago when I upgraded my motherboard and processor from a 400mhz FSB Intel board to a 533mhz FSB Intel board.

It is just not good policy to simply transplant an OS on disk to another machine. Try that with FreeBSD and see what happens... If you can no longer simply move disks from one machine to another I interpret this as a step forward for MS. I have seen more 95 and 98 boxes tied in knots due to such transplants... There are no shortcuts.
