U no Haul if U have Ford Explorer
« on: January 08, 2004, 10:22:24 am »
From Yahoo/AP

Quote:

"U-Haul has chosen not to rent behind this tow vehicle based on our history of excessive costs in defending lawsuits involving Ford Explorer towing combinations," the company told the newspaper, adding that the move is "not related to safety issues."

Uh, dude, wouldn't lawsuits invovling the towing combination be related to safety?  Why else would there be lawsuits?  The combo looks ugly?

It's the colors, you can't have burgandy red (seems to be most common color for them) mixed with an orange U-Haul.

There is more to this than they are letting out IMHO.

Ford Explorers have just about the crappiest automatic transmission ever. I'm sure U-Haul is just sick of paying for new trannys when dopey customers don't read the towing instructions in the owner's manual, then proceed to burn up their tranny because they overheated it. People who tow need to get a transmission oil cooler to help with the excess heat (this is recommended by every manufacturer and many offer it as an option). If they don't get the cooler they are supposed to follow strict weight and speed recommendations in order not to damage the vehicle. Knowing how much people "read" instructions, I'm not surprized U-Haul is playing CYA on a vehicle that is known as a shotty product.

Its probably just a case of

"Ah got me uh SUV, ah ken haul anuthin I wanna."

People need to be more careful and RTFM.  I always do when I buy a new truck so I won't do something dumb
and overstress the vehicle.

Although I don't know why the explorer would be singled out.

I'm confused. Why do U-Haul get it in the neck because the driver is an idiot? It isn't their fault the driver didn't read/understrand the vehicles manual.

Because people can sue over anything, whether the suit is reasonable or not - and when someone sues, U-Haul has to defend, or lose the case by default.  Since we don't have a loser-pays legal system, the company was paying out the wazoo to defend against stupid lawsuits.

Loser pays sucks.  The biggest companies could always afford the best.....and my assumption is that the best will win more often than the average.

The net effect is to suppress the use of the legal system to address injustice.

A net win for the haves versus the have nots.

Because while ignorance of the law is no excuse there doesn't seem to be any obligation not to be ignorant of common sense. The case would hinge on the fact that U-Haul did not warn them that damage could occur, either by flipping over as the article claims (Which is silly. All SUV's suffer from this problem, Explorers are no worse or better on average) or due to improper towing proceedure. This is America. People don't need to be responsible for themselves here, remember?

My fathers favorite:  F%<&$^ over rebuilt Dodge.

He worked on cars for over 30 years, never had a good thing to say about Ford after '78.
