SFB Mobile base - WIP -- edit: completed.
« on: December 30, 2003, 10:06:36 pm »
One of the last items missing in my models folder for the next OP+ release is the Mobile Base model. All races used these as temporary repair and resupply stations during an offensive, or when a base was lost.

Its construction involves 2 specially-made habitable pods that tugs can carry for the center portion of the hull. These pods are accompanied by 4 normal-sized pods installed around. These 4 pods could be just about anything that fits, but normally would be some cargo pods, a repair pod and maybe something else (light battle pod? CVL pod?). Finally, 2 base augmentation modules are installed to fill in the blanks.

A convoy of tugs would normally be sufficient to build this base and set it up.

Here's a screenshot of the WIP:

I'm open to comments, as I am close to finishing this. What do you think?

Very nice work Firesoul!  Got two questions for you.  First, is their any visable weapon monuts on it?  I dont' seem too see any Phaser Banks.  Second, what modeling program did you use too make the Mobile Base?  I use Milkshape and I was just wondering how you did the Texturing.  I would like too make Textures like that for my models.

Mounts? There are some, but I wanted a generic-looking unit so that I could use it for all the races. Also, remember that the 4 side pods are most likely weaponless cargopods from tugs.

I used 3dsmax and some bits of corel draw. I have made a plain hull BMP texture that I used at first. I would do a "Unwrap UVW" and unfold it to how I like it. I would adjust the colors of the lines, remove the grid and take a screenshot of that.

Afterwards, it's just a question of filling in the blanks, and removing lines you don't want.

Can we assume that different races would use different colors?

You can assume, yes.
... can you assume I'm gonna go through the trouble of making different textures? Uh. no.
I have my model that I needed. That's enough of that.

this is good from the idea but the basic hull plating in the texture make it look like it is in space form some hundred years
but overall it looks good

i use Milkshape for all of my modeling work and texturing with it is more easy than to use those complicated 3DSMax texturing tools and you surely need a texture paint program like Photoshop,Paintshop Pro or something similar.

Hey FireSoul. Nice job, man. As always, you give us something that's been missing for so very long. I love the whole concept. Thanks.

I still don't know how this unit is going to fit in..

I'm thinking that I'll insert them as BSs but set as "SPECIAL". Let the scripters sort it out.
... maybe a multi-part scripted story?

1- taking a sector, something special that needs a presence.
2- sending a monitor, and playing it for a defense scenario.
3- convoy to said sector with the parts for this base..
4- defense of sector with mobile base and monitor.

Any scripters feel up to putting together an interesting story arc?

Great addition once again to the SFC universe Firesoul.    Hopefully the scriipters will and I believe they will, come up with something worthy of your efforts there.  I know 3.2 will be excellent and worth the wait.
