Let me tell you about my Emachines PC
« on: December 24, 2003, 02:29:09 pm »
This little Emachines 500a that I bought 4 years ago was the lowest end Pentium 3 on the market (500 Mhz) and one of the cheapest if not the cheapest.  After all this time it is still going strong. Never a head crash.  Never needed to be serviced.  I play all the SFC titles on it.  I have also downloaded a number of game demos that demanded higher minimum specs than my PC and it has handled them just fine except that the graphics card could not render the effecfs and textures properly.  It's not overclocked and never has been.  It's one tough little machine.  I was cautious of the brand when I bought it, but I couldn't ask for a better first computer.  So don't be afraid to buy an off-brand or a cheaper model with the same specs as higher priced brands.  This cheapo machine hasn't had a problem in over 4 years.  Knock on wood! (and I just did).

I saw in a best Buy add last Sunday that Emachines has a new system based on the AMD 64 bit MB/Procc. I'm glad to hear your machine is running for you though. I tell you, I don't know what I'd do without At least a 1 gig machine though.

My 400Mhz Celeron HP computer has been running strong for that long too.  It still runs better than any WinME machine around, and crashes less than any computer I've ever used!

BTW, that's nearly top spec for a PII-based Celeron, and it's 401MHz out of the box

THUS FAR...emachines have consistently put out extremely solid machines that work on the get go (according to PCMagazine reports)...I don't know how they do it, but they do.  Their machines are supposedly much more solid in working than all but Macintosh's and IBM machines.

Their Tech support is not supposed to be the best however, but it is supposed to be better than Dell's current Tech Support (but not better than Dell's Tech support of 4 years ago...supposedly).

I say emachines is always a good and solid buy...but if you want to upgrade, be sure to know a lot about the integrated units they use...

I'm pretty certain some games wouldn't run all that well on it though, like Neverwinter Nights (if you follow directions my uncle put up for how to get that game to run on a Voodoo, you could get it to run I believe, but still not as well as on a Newer machine) will run jerky if at all, Anything requiring OpenGL 1.2 or above (this is for an emachines of 4 years or older...OpenGL I believe runs fine on current emachine releases) which includes many of the FPS games I play.

Overall, it's great to hear how solid emachines are...they are well made.

As long as they use standard quality parts its hard to screw up a desktop.  Laptops can be easily screwed up though... but those are made by one of two companies in actuality so its rare to have a truely screwed up laptop with quality parts.

I know exactly what computer you are talking about, a friend of mine has the same exact computer and loves it. Except he put ina WXP Pro, a better CD-ROM burner, and a new video card. I was surprised though, it is a decent box for a package deal. I distrust most package deals on the market nowdays. Aot of package deals out there only allow for slight RAM and drive upgrades or swap outs. That's why I never buy package deals, because it's hard to find a decent one that will be fully upgradable.

I had an emacine previous to my current computer and I found it to be a pretty good system as well.  Their tech support was actually pretty good in my opinion when the system broke one time, it wouldn't turn on at all, I just sent it back to them and if it wasn't for UPS having lost the new system the sent to me I would of had it in a weeks time.  The system they sent me is in fact still in use tody after probably 4 or 5 years.  Wasn't great for gaming, in fact the onboard card caused more config screw ups then anything else and couldn't even touch my crappy voodoo 2 performance wise, but what do you except from a cheap computer.
