Because of geocities' image-hosting policy, those avatars won't show up properly if linked from there.  I suggest you either put them up on the Knights site, or just let everyone download the zip from me.

The thing is though, you're only actually hosting the one that you use. I'm not sure if everyone wants their avatar to be a Command lieutenant's rank stripes.

Behold - braid!  And properly angled half-stripes, too.

I've updated the zip and the index file (check up-thread for the new images).

Ahhhh, those look much nicer.  I think everyone will appreciate the extra work.

I changed the files that StClair worked up so well ever so slightly.  I put some shading on the cuff itself to make it look a little more round, and I added ranks all the way up for all the ranks (Who's to say there isn't a commodore in the science branch?  What about the Surgeon General?) and added command dress green for all the ranks too.  If anyone's interested (StClair?), let me know.

I thought about adding Command green, but if you'll look at the design of that alternate uniform, you'll note the rank braid is along the collar, not the sleeves.  So rather than just add another blank rectangle, this one of apple green, I decided to leave it out.

I like the shading effect; I probably should have thought of that myself.  (Uhh... they're "on the rack"!  Yeah, that's it...)  Can you zip those up and send them to me?

Higher ranks for other departments... enh.  Mostly I go by TOS, in which everyone we see of Captain rank or greater is in gold.  Still, I suppose it doesn't hurt.

Glad to know people like these.

There is one version of the wrap-around that has rank on the cuffs (first season?) and one version on the collar (later in the series I believe).

I'll send them to you this morning, and yes, I like them the best of all I've seen so far.

I've uploaded Fab's excellent modified and extended image set as http://www.efn.org/~kellys/tosrank2.zip , while leaving the 'flat' originals up under the same name if anyone wants them.  And I've changed my own avatar to match.

For reference, here's what the new set looks like:

Thanks again, Fab.

(Now, should I be really obsessive and make up a "true-color" (olive green) set to replace the Command "gold"?  Here's a sample...)

Yes, it seems that I am that obsessive.  (Heck, easiest just to go ahead and do it rather than waffling.)

Gradient and flat versions of Command greens can be found in http://www.efn.org/~kellys/cmd_green.zip .

Thanks, StClair.  I appreciate your work.

The problem with the true-color one is that no one really sees it that way.  It never appeared on camera in that color, so even though that is the actual color, it looks strange because it appears like a cross between the "normal" gold and the dress greens.

Granted it's more accurate, but when I first saw your avatar my first question was, "Is that gold, or is that dress green?"  I never thought it might be "true" mustard color.

The irony is that, looking at it on the color wheel, it's not actually green at all - it's pure yellow, equal parts red and green, just desaturated.  No blue at all.  It only looks green-ish because it's Not Orange.

I changed my own avatar because I was watching an episode last night ("The Savage Curtain") and I have to admit, the new ones look a lot more like what Kirk, Sulu et al are wearing.  I'm not talking about fabric swatches; I mean what I actually see on the screen.  In particular, it improves the contrast between the sleeve and the braid.

Anyway, that's why I made the new Command sleeves a separate download, rather than just replacing the ones in the revised zip; so that people can make their own choice.

I'll shut up now.

That's true, the Next Generation operations yellow certainly did seem to change from Star Trek command color.  It's probably the same color, just better film.  And it does show the braid up a little better.  I'll stick with blue for no other reason than I don't care for the yellow, and the guys in red tend to get shot a lot.

If anyone's still watching this thread:  I've posted what will likely be the final version of these avatars.  Here's the link:
http://www.efn.org/~kellys/tosranks.zip

And here's what they look like:

As you can see, I went with gold after all, but a more tan/sandy gold than I had before.  (Believe me, I watched several episodes and sampled a lot of screen-caps to try to get it just right.  Ironically, it's pretty much the same shade as I had at the very start.)   I also added a little more orange to the red, and lightened up all the sleeves just a bit.  (All those well-lit TOS rooms. )  Finally, I tightened up the spacing of the Commander and Lt. Commander stripes, and added Lt. JG (as seen in "The Naked Time").

Just for comparison, here are a few examples of the first batch:
-   -
(Quite a difference, huh?)

I'd edit the previous posts to get rid of duplicates and dead links, but I've passed the time limit - sorry.  Thanks to Fab for his help (and for goading me to take the time to do it right) and to everyone else for your kind words and suggestions.
