I'll be brief:

.. I don't think SFB would be SFB without Trek in it.

Right again!
So many of the systems, and how they operate and interact, come directly out of trek. If you tried to make an SFB based game that just changed the names and faces in order to get around licensing, you'd be sued in a heartbeat! Especially since you'd have to tie the two together in order to successfully market it.
As far as the Enterprise era goes, Harry said on these forums that ATVI's license covers ALL Trek.

I totally agree....I for one would put the Trek right back in as soon as I loaded up my Trekless GAW.

However, I'm just looking for a way to get Galaxies at War without going through Activision as a publisher or violate any Trek liscenses.

Perhaps a joint project between ADB and Taldren?  A subscription service?  Just wondering what is possible beyond admitting defeat?

I don't see this.  Just how does a phaser damage table from SFB have anything to do with Trek.  If you call it a laser table it's the same thing but no longer Trek.  I never heard Kirk say ahead speed 32.  Do you see what I'm saying?

ADB has the sole rights to the SFB ruleset.  Including the mechanics of it.  I don't see why a non-Trek game could not be exactly SFB under the hood.

well.. uhm..

.. if it isn't Trek.. and it isn't SFB.. (both).. I won't be buying it,,

.. yeah.. it's easy to deduce from the above that I didn't buy SFC3 either.
Strafer did buy it, and I actually finished the single-player campaigns, but having doine that I quickly lost interest. Span of interest I had in it? .. 1 week.

And this seems to you like something that would sell?  "Presenting a game that you can mod to be Trek!"  Modding communities are nice, but not enough to carry a title for the kind of sales you need to make a profit in the industry.

I think you're being very impractical.

Do I believe that an SFB-based game from Taldren could be a success?  Absolutely - one needs only look at SFC, SFC2, and SFC:OP to see that.  Add the things that people have been clamoring for re: GaW (properly) and the Dyna, make it relatively stable, and it is a guarranteed hit.

Could it be a success without Trek (even if it were moddable to be Trek-based)?  Maybe.

The tricks are in:

1) Finding a way to market the game without Trek.

2) Financing development.  Since Taldren does not (to my knowledge) own the code for the SFC series, the relevant parts would have to be rewritten from scratch.  Even doing GaW using the SFC code as a base would take time - and doing it from scratch would take more.  I don't know what Taldren's monthly expenses are, but we are likely looking at $1-2 million for development costs - and that money has to come from somewhere.

Does SFC have any really wealthy fans willing to bankroll development of GaW?

I think Galaxies at War even without "Trek" would be a great game. I like the idea of a Taldren created (with the help of the fans) universe. I thought Erik's comments on the direction they were thinking about were very exciting and I for one would like to see a game with that much to offer. With the ability to create races (which I take it would include the technology as well) within a defined set of rules would be great. Years ago I played an rpg called "Space Opera" (not that it was that great a game, but it was good). Taldrens Ideas remind me of that game. Mesh that with SFB rules and you would have a great game that could grow and expand as far as the imaginations of the players could take it.

Babylon 5 Command, maybe? StarWars Command? Farscape Command? Or maybe something completely new.

I like the sound of Farscape:  Galaxies at War.  The Henson Co. is looking to do a cartoon series and live action movie based on the Farscape series.  Henson might be interested in a Taldren Command series that coincides with these releases.  I wouldn't dismiss this option out of hand, as Henson has released a Farscape game before.

They should do a ship-like Everquest in the Star Trek Universe....that would rule.
