SFC3 Laptop
« on: February 18, 2003, 12:01:25 am »
I am looking into buying a laptop computer.  I was wondering if anyone knew of any really good deals out there.  I am currently a college student and like to play games like SFC3 so performance is a must but budget is around $1000 and I kinda need it to have Win XP pro.

I posted here because I wanted to get feedback on if sfc3 and those type of games play well on a laptop?

My desktop is:

WinXp Pro
1900 Athlon XP
1024 DDR333 Ram
40+(80+80 raid)+1gig hard drives
SB Audigy
GF4 4600 128ram

I'm not too familiar with laptops that run so little in cost.. but i use only laptops and mine is currently going for $2499 from toshiba...

Look it up on the toshiba web site at www.toshiba.com under notebooks..

mine is the Toshiba Satellite 5205-S703 and it has XP home edition (I upgraded to Pro edition about 2 days later for $150 more).. you can get the 5205-S704 that comes with XP-Pro but I think it is $100 more on the Toshiba web site...

the system has

Mobile Intel P IV 2.00 GHz - M
60 GIG HDD @ 7200 RPM Ultra-ATA
NVidia GeForce4 460 64Mb graphics controller
15" UXGA diagonal TFT Flatscreen monitor (supports up to 1600x1200 setting at 32bit color and does so nicely with the Geforce4 460 card)
DVD -R/RW-CD -R/RW combo drive
Wi-Fi wireless NIC and LAN 11MBPS connection when in range of a wireless transmitter (auto connects when turned on)
512 MB DDR 2100 RAM (expandable to 1 GIG, which is what I am running)
Yahama AC-XG Dolby 6.1 digital surround sound card
Harmon / Kardon Dolby 6.1 Digital speakers with sub woofer
i.LINK port
Microsoft Works Suite
Integrated V 0.92/56K modem (fax/voice included)
Remote control for video/audio playback on external TV / Monitor
10/100 Ethernet port
Expandable bay
2 1/2 hour battery
interactive cPad
and many other options... it is basically a portable desktop.

hope that this information helps you decide.. Toshiba also has many other models available.

Get something with a graphics accelerator of at LEAST 32 mb.  My 16 mb one stunk.  SFC3 plays wonderfully on my 64 mb Geforce.

You'll need a laptop with either an ATI Mobility Radeon IGP/7500/9000 or a nVIdia GF420/440/460 with at least 32MB. The MR9000 and the GF460 is great but unless you play PFS alot, it's not necessary. Especially when you are on a budget.  My old laptop uses the Mobility Radeon and it was pretty good with most game and SFC3 runs fine on it at 800x600 . My new Comapq Presario 2810T uses The MR9000 and I can run it perfectly at 1280x1024.  Realisticly, you will need to spend about $1500 on a good gaming laptop. The Dell Inspirion 8200 is a great laptop, a bit heavy bulky though.  Some of the lower cost Toshiba is pretty good but have short battery life. The current HP/Compaq line sucks (the Presario 2800 series was the last great Compaq before HP F**Ks it up).

P.S. Although current laptop is perfectly fine as a Desktop replacement. Video graphics is still one generation or more behind. Seeing that you have a Ti4600 in your desktop. Don't expect the same performance on any laptop currently on the market.

The Alienware is just a rebadged Sager and can be found at a lot of smaller vendors for a lot less. One of them is Prostar which has been around for many years. (I have no experience with them personally but they were already around when I start using laptop about 5 years ago and they are still around now while a lot of others have came and gone).

That siad. The cheapest you can get one of those is still close to $2K+ so I would advise looking at some of the lower cost ones. Just get one with a good video chipset.

I got my Toshiba at Circuit City for like $1100 in June.  It's the 1405-S151

Specs:
1.2 GHz Celeron
512 Mb RAM (had 256 on the floor, but I doubled it for $80 )
Trident Video Accelerator CyberBlade XP ai1
ALi Audio Accelerator WDM Driver

...and all incarnations of SFC run fine on it

You might be able to negotiate them down to $1000 for this model, since that was like 8 months ago

If you want quality, stay away from Hewlett Packard and Compaq. If you don't want to get ripped off and lied to, stay away from Dell. If you want a good laptop, go Sony, Toshiba, IBM, or the Alienware company that was mentioned. (Sager?)

This is all from personal research, I was lucky enough to run into a Sony Vaio for less than $700 ($1800 orignally, floor model that was in a case for its store life). Before that, I did research.

Most Compaqs, if you look on CNET, will give you problems within a month. 95% of the negative posts reported failing video cards, sound cards, cd drives, etc. HP is the same.

Dell is just a rip off, they misadvertise and lie. One time I ugraded the sound card on my friend's computer he was building and Dell said the new soundcard was incompatible with the KEYBOARD!!! They wanted me to upgrade to the $50 Dell Multimedia Keyboard. I'm sorry, no way a soundcard would require a specific keyboard.

Again, just to save Taldren, all views expressed in this post in no way reflect the opinions of Taldren or its employees and are entirely based on my (the poster's) experience and opinions.
