We started a discussion on the H&S section and got sidetracked with WW 2 armor and then a request for some good games.
If you are looking for board games, the defunct Avalon Hill company had some good ones such as Squad Leader, plus a lot of add ons to it. Cross of Iron was my favorite add on. Panzer Leader and Panzer Blitz were also great. I will let others chime in with some of their other games as well.
There was also an Eastern Front type that was played on a larger scale using division sized units. I forgot the name of the company (seems like it was SSI). Great game.
As for the PC games, I liked Patton Strikes Back. Good game with scalable complexity. You could play either side as well and it is in real time format. Not bad for a game that came out in 1990.
My all time favorite is Steel Panther's World At War (SPWAW). There are three Steel Panther games from SSI. The first and third were my favorite. Turn based with a good editor. The guys who developed these game went on to form Matrix Games. They also had the ok to jazz up Steel Panthers and released SPWAW.
You can play just about any country that was in the war. Want to know what it was like using crappy Italian equipment. No problem. Want to face the Japanese as a Chinese officer, go for it. Want to face panzers with Polish cavalry, good luck. You also have the use of off-board artillery, naval artillery, it's there. Air support is included. The game is played on squad level with inidividual vehicles.
The best thing about this full sized game is that it is free. Yup, zero. It is avialable at
Matrix Games website. Beware it is a 400+ MB download.
MG also has a few other old war games that are free as well as some new stuff they are developing.
If I am not playing my all time favorite PC game (SFC2), I am playing this or Morrowind.
