Any Texans out there served jury duty?
« on: December 15, 2003, 09:22:03 pm »
I got a bomb of a letter today, seems finally after 36 years of being alive, they have tagged me for jury duty, and my flight to E.P. and trip to Chihuahua is this weekend. From what I am reading I see no way out of having to be back in Austin on the 5th of Jan. I was only planning to come back for my med reviews, but I guess that I have to come back after the holidays. You would figure a disabled vet that is on 100 percent would be excused, but no, I read the excuses clearly and so far I cannot find a loophole.

Any Texans served on a jury before? If so, did you try to get out of it or did you ACTUALLY manage to get out of it? Any advice will be helpful, I'm going to call Sheriiff Frazier's office tomorrow and ask as well...

For all those that say screw it Jack, just skip out, well, it gets you a warrant for your arrest, and the fine is 1k, and yes, I need to be able to return to the U.S. without problems.

Jack, It's an honor and a Privilage that you have been selected to serve our fine Nation not only by your Milatary service, But also as a Civilian of the Great State of Lower Oklahoma. I know this Breaks into your Immigration into Mexico, But just think, You could land on a big murder case, and help put another Citisen on Death Row.

<Sirgod takes off Republican pin>

actually I don't see a way out for you Bro, and I hope you do read the above part as a joke. What's the old story, I don't wan't to be tried by a Jury of people not smart enough to get out of Jury Duty.

I agree--I don't see a way right now of getting out of it.  In NJ there are only three ways that I know of of getting out of jury duty--scheduled hospitalization,  being the sole provider for children or elderly person where jury duty would be a financial hardship, and a death in your immediate family.

Traveling outside of the country is not one of them.  I will be traveling to Rome at the end of January right around the time the manslaughter trial of an ex-NBA player, which was recently moved to my county, is scheduled to begin.  I bought some trip cancellation insurance just to be safe.

In NJ jurors are only paid $1.00 per hour service.  This rate was set forty years ago when $1.00 was the minimum wage and it hasn't changed since.

Dude lie your ass off. Just say you have a family memeber that needs your care and you can't leave em. They never check your stories and no reason to put off a trip for jury duty.

Thanks for the advice, and no, there is no clause for family emergencies (I live in a hardcore state, remember?). As for Texas being the southern part of OK, I reply like the Mexican Ambassador to the U.N. did to Mexico "Americans think Mexico is their backyard." Well, last time I looked, OK is Texas's front yard, and Mexico is our backyard, hehehehehehehe. Oh yeah, the Gulf of Mexico is our swimming pool too!

In all seriousness, I doubt I can escape it too, the thing is, Vicky is never going to believe me on this one. I had doubts about moving anyways as Leda and I may not have a marriage, but we have lived together like friends and respected each other, besides, I really do love this country. Ahhhh, the crazy things we do when we love someone so much, like move to third world countries...

Guess I'll have to go get this document scanned and e-mail it and say hey, I'm sorry, I did not ask for the extra expenses of airline tickets either...

Just got tapped for Jury duty last month.  There aren't many legit ways of getting out of it - even financial difficulty won't do it.

The case I was pulled for was settled just before it went to court, so I sat in the courthouse all day and did nothing for $6.

I got tagged 3 years ago for jury duty in a Murder case here in CA. It lasted six weeks and I got $435.74

But during jury selection, I saw a Lady get out of jury duty, by stating that she believes that if a defendent did not testify in there own defence. Then that proved to her that the defendent was Guilty    Now why did I not think of that

Add lack of transportation as a valid excuse. I got out of State Grand Jury duty by stating in a letter that I didn't own a vehicle (true at the time) and that it was physically impossible to get public transportation (rail or bus) to Trenton from home  (still true, doesn't really exist in southern NJ).
