Seriously, if you have access to another machine, try connecting the printer to it and see if you can get it to print.  That will tell you whether the problem is with the printer / cable, or the computer.

I am inclined to think it is the computer.  If this is the case, see my earlier comment about a Non-XP OS.

I would hazard a guess that the problem is in how XP is handling the driver for that printer.  The easy thing to do would be to remove the print drivers and reinstall - but as Windows XP is so helpful in terms of keeping things around that you have uninstalled, this probably won't work.

Another thing you might try (if you have one) is loading drivers for and hooking up a different USB printer to the machine, and see if it will print to that one.

Assuming you have already tested the original printer on another machine, this will tell you if the problem is XP with the original printer's drivers, or XP and printing in general.

I encountered something similiar with my Epson Stylus C60 a while back. I have two compujters networked together and the C60 shared. Ironically, I discovered that since the printer was connected through a USB Hub, the computer that the hub was connected to had to be on in order for either computers to send prints to the printer. Once I realized this, I made sure that both computers were on. Once I did that, prints would go through without a hitch.

Try using a parallel cable with the printer. Make sure that the USB port is selected in the port settings.

Go to Settings | Control Panel | Printers and Faxes | Your printer |

Right click on the printer icon and select properties, then click on "Ports"

Make sure the USB port is selected in the list and NOT print to file or parallel.

Many dual mode printers will often default to the parallel port and often you have to manually select the USB port.

I personally prefer to use the parallel port most of the time. all my printing is in black and white with few pictures so there isnt need to tie up a usb port

Check that the printer you have set is not "printing to file" or an option like that.

Start --> Printers & Faxes

Ensure that the only printer installed is the one you want & check that it is set as default.

Other than that, try in the print menu of the application you are trying to print from.

ok..some trouble shooting.

First of all, if it is a USB connected printer then with some models you need to start installing the printer divers before you connectr the printer to the USB port.

Also...

You just plain need to be sure you installed the drivers...

Also...

I assume that this is a XP compatable printer.

Also...

Try that stuff, take two asprin, and let us know how it is going...

Can you give more information than it's a "printer?"  How can one help you with such paltry information.  What make, model, type of connectivity?

try selecting and deselecting any print to file action boxes. Sometimes an option will be selected without the GUI showing it. This procedure would just make sure it is not printing to file instead. Also in the printer is shared (Say with another printer in the house) Sometimes that will trigger a print to file situation as well. The settings in the full version of adobe acrobat can do this. My computer in the office is set up to do this with adobe.

Maybe, just maybe your printer is broken?

Did you try the test button? Not sure on your model which button that would be, but your instructions should tell you.

Best,
Jerry

Start with the basics....  Go to the printers menu, right-click on this printer, and then click on 'print test page'.

See if that works or does something screwy.
