A question for Erik
« on: February 17, 2003, 12:11:06 pm »
I've been thinking about current difficulties.   We just got 2 feet of snow in D.C.  We are simply not ready for that in this part of the country.  I'll be snowed in for days.

So . . .

On a Pain in the Butt scale of 1 - 10 where does the dreaded ST copyright issue fall?

Is it a major stumbling block?

Is there a way around it?  (Other than moving Taldren to Pakistan)

Does Taldren own the Copyright on the game play of EAW, SFC2 or SFC3.  That is after you remove all the ST copyrighted stuff?

I have a feeling you know where I am going with this.   Of course, then the question is, would it sell, without the name?

I hear Pakistan has nice weather.

Copyright or not we would never work to violate another's work.

Paramount owns ST & ST games.  ATVI is the exclusive licensee.  Taldren owns the code behind SFC.

Thus, our thoughts lie in new directions.

Well that is what I figured.   Not suggesting that you violate anything.  Just wondering who owned what.  my concern is anything without the "Star Trek" name won't sell well enough.   I hope I'm wrong.  I really have no interest in any other games,  so I'll wait and see.

There is a board game called Starfire that is based on a couple of books by David Weber.  It has alot of depth and might produce a very interesting PC game.

Actually it is the other way around, the books are based on the game.  The game Starfire has been around a VERY long time.  It's a great game too, I would give just about anything to see it on the computer  course I said that about SFB too

New directions can be good. Especially when you've been doing essentially the same thing for 4+ years.

To hell with Star Trek, Paramount, Activision, and the stress they bring. Anyhow, this game isn't about Trek, never has been, never will be. Some of the ideas you mentioned in that poll you posted in the GAW thread sounded very interesting. I'd like to see some follow up on those...

Ah yes, Starfire! For all those who like to fight with the SFB crowd, you wouldn't have to miss a beat.
