Just What Is The Deal With Mars?
« on: December 10, 2003, 05:04:52 am »
I just read that the Japanese probe to Mars has failed. I know that about half the missions ever sent to Mars from this planet have failed, while we seem to be able to make it to Jupiter, Saturn and beyond without a hitch. Hell, Pioneer 11 is still out there kicking although it's too far away and too weak to read anymore. Why do we have so much trouble getting to one of our nearest neighbors? Are we really that lame? Is it a government plot? Its that damn face isn't it?!

There have been quite a few failures of probes sent to Mars. Then again there have been more probes sent to Mars than any other destination. Some have had design flaws inadequate redundancy and some were doomed by incompetantcy. There have been failures in probes to other planets though not fatal to my knowledge. The main antenna failed to unfurl on the (was it cassini or Galileo probe?) leading to greatly reduced data flow. The mission succeeded because the small lower capacity backup antenna worked beyond expectation. Mars may be surrounded by small chunks of rocks. It's two moons are actually captured asteroids. It may be surrounded by virtually invisible debris that pounds probes. (And I'd be very interested in knowing how much is there) Of course it could be that the martians don't like nosey neighbors, too. But whatever it is, the truth *is* out there! Cheaper & Faster may work for chucking a probe at the moon, but not beyond that. Strap a helmet-cam on your head and peddle down to a local park for a quick look-see, but you'll probably die from exposure if you try to make it to the next State.

I think we are too accustomed to seeing fancy-dancy sci-fi ships on TV.

These things are hard to do. Frankly, I'm surprised we don't see more failures....

I wonder if the recent solar flare outbreak might have had something to do with the faliure of the japanese probe to mars...

That was put forward as a reason for the failure of some of it's equipment.

You know what they should do...put a signal/homing device on Mars...then launch items and just have it use a little steering fuel/motion jets to direct it to that signal...

Just a thought.

All we need to do is develop gates - and have it blow up the moon... at the same time we colonize Mars, Europa, Ganymede, have a big war on Titan, and the Bebop will rule us all!
