My son wants a PS2. Perhaps mainly because all his friends have one, and he's never played Xbox.

I haven't a clue. Which is better?

I think both are pretty good, and you have a wide selection of titles for either system. A factor to consider is that the PS2 DOES seem to be a bit more popular, and your son may have an easier time finding someone to swap games with based on that alone. Doesn't sound like that should be an important factor, but not having to buy a game every so often because you're son's best friend has it will add up over time.

I've had a PS2 for about 2.5 years now, and have no complaints.

I've owned my PS2 since it came out, and I am without a question happy I made the decision to buy it over the Xbox.  However, if your son is extrememly interested in playing online, XBox is your best bet.  PS2 DOES have online play, but it's not done as well as XBox.  PM/E-mail me if you've got specific questions.  I feel I'm pretty knowledgable, and definitly better than the average register monkey.

We just bought a PS2 ourselves.  If your son's friends all have a PS2 than that would be the best bet.  More than likely your son has been over to his friend?s house playing their PS2.  This way if you buy a PS2 your son will be able to hit the ground running.  IMHO PS2 has a slightly better selection as well.

Which is better? Well, in terms of capabilities and features, the XBOX is far away the superior.  Its simply no contest.

*The XBOX has a hard drive. You save your games to this hard drive. You'll never run out of space. Hence, you will never need a memory card. You can also story music on this hard drive, if you wish.

*The XBOX can copy and burn CD's for you.

*The XBOX has four controller ports, twice as many as the PS2.

*The XBOX Live is reported to be far superior to the PS2 online multiplayer system.

*Both will play DVD's for you. They are cheap DVD players, though.

*As already mentioned, the XBOX is a considerably more powerful machine.

Most titles these days are multi-platform, but there still exist some exclusive titles. Sometimes its because XBOX/GC games are simply to much for the PS2 too to handle (they are usually the games that make you gasp and say "wow"), other times it's because they're big "franchise" titles. In your selection you should consider which titles you wish access to most.

They only "advantages" the playstation might have is price and a few nice exclusive titles.

I own both, BTW.

We bought our PS2 first  two years ago because it had more games available at the time.  We picked up an Xbox this year because there were some titles we wanted that weren't available on the PS2.  (The first Buffy the Vampire Slayer game).  From what we've seen, the xBox is a little better, it is newer tech.  The fact that his friends have PS2's does point you towards that also.

I guess I would suggest looking at the titles you are  interested in and see which platform has more of them and go that way.

One thing to consider is that the New Play station will be launched some time next year.

I have the XBOX and my best friend has the PS2.  The XBOX blows it away .  Finding games is really no problem anymore.

A few things

1) New PS will most likely NOT be launched next year.
2) Newer PS2 can burn/write to DVDs and CDs
3) You have to buy a "DVD Playback kit" for Xbox.

More points as I think of them.

Something else to consider is tech support.

I bought my nephew an X-Box for Christmas the year it came out.  A little over a year later, the DVD drive crapped out.  It wouldn't recognize game disks or movies.  Since it was past the year waranty, I cringed at the thought of paying for its repair or purchasing a new X-Box.  I tried cleaning it to no effect.

I called Microsoft X-Box tech support and told them the problem.  They agreed with me that the DVD drive was the problem.  I told them that the unit was more than a year old.  However since I didn't register it when I bought it, it wasn't on their system.  So the tech added it to the system and made the waranty effective FROM THAT DAY.  It would be repaired for free.  Microsoft sent me an empty prepaid box to ship the unit to them and it was repaired and returned within three days!

People may love to bash Microsoft, but my experience with X-Box tech support couldn't be beat!

Both systems are matured, with good title selections. The X-Box is slightly newer, and with better specs, but the difference is mainly the hard disk and the availability of mods/hacks. Microsoft is quite ardent on getting exclusive titles for the X-Box, so it will see a few titles that you won't see on the PS2, but that goes both ways; developers are not keen on loosing out on the larger PS2 market. If you - sorry, your kid -  like japanese games - Square, Namco, etc - those titles are more likely to be PS2 exclusive.

The gamecube, which is the newest of the three big names, might also enter the equation but I know little about it except that the pricing is friendly.

As far as the cost of the two is concerned, at least looking at EBGames, cost is roughly the same for both consoles, considering both the best sellers and console systems themselves. The X-Box often comes bundled with the DVD set, but the Silver PS2 also comes with a remote controller.

Both are easily made DVD-zone selectable... a plus for me but probably less so for you.

In early 2004, Sony will launch an interim version called PSX - it's still a PS2, but with hard drive, improved processors, digital image editing, surround system, internet, and so on. It's somewhat expensive, pricing is initially at 719 dollars, but is labeled a 'digital appliance' - probably not very useful if you have most of the functionality allready. I think that's more of a footnote; you could buy a PS2, dvd player, AND pc for the same amount... not in such a neat, living-room-friendly package, but still.

The PS3 is scheduled for launch in 2005.

The XBox 2 is on the rumor level still; nothing so reliable I really want to post it but I've heard 2005 and 2006 mentioned.

As for unit sales, I do not know the exact figures; the PS2 reached 50 million christmas last year, while the X-Box reached 10 million august this year.

Right now, which you should buy is a tossup because both systems has at least two years left in them, but allready next year it'd be time to consider waiting for the next generation consoles.

As far as the kid is concerned, he'll likely be happy with either. If he gets a PS2 he gets access to a large amount of games from his friends right away, while with an X-Box he'll have games his friends doesn't... something that might be a plus.

An aside on the internet stuff:
I have a PS2; the X-box live functionality is of marginal interest since I have a PC for that, but supposedly, the X-Box  is superior in this regard, or at least got off to an earlier, and smoother, start, but supposedly the PS2 is definitely playable on the net as well.. SOCOM was the big name for that on the PS2, where you could paly with a headset and issue voice commands to both teammates over the net and AI soldiers (through voice recognition). Which is sort of neat, but I never tried the damnthing.

On the other side of the coin, games launched both for the X-Box and PC, like MtG: Battlegrounds, can be played platform-independently; you can, on your PC, play against someone on an X-Box.

The PSX sony intends to launch is basically a sony receiver that can play DVD movies and PS2 games.  I waste of money unless you don't already have those type of things.  It doesn't do anything new.

Oh, and the PS2 HDD is going to be bundled with PS2's very shortly, just like the Network adaptor is now.

Opinions?
My son wants a PS2. Perhaps mainly because all his friends have one, and he's never played Xbox.

I haven't a clue. Which is better?
thx folks...

I own a PS2 and I have experience with the X-Box... I'd say in the long run, the X-Box would be the better choice.

DM,

I don't know about better, but Xbox will be offering Black 9 when it is released. PS2 is just a whim and thought for now--as far as I know.

Best,

Have the kid write a letter to Santa. Whichever system is mentioned in the
letter is the one you get for him.

Right now I have a PS2, even though my kids use it more than I do.

The short and quick answer:

The x-box is a better box, but games for the PS2 has a slightly larger selection, but these are not end-of-the-world differences.

So as the console the kid wants is a PS2, you might as well go with that, if he wanted an X-box, there wouldn't really be any good reason not to go with that, either.

Thanks to each of you for replying!

Looks like it's to be the PS2.

He's wants it, his friends have it, and turns out Mrs. Claus already bought it

Also, a friend of mine in the gaming industry claims in general Xbox titles are more teen-adult oriented. There are more kid-oriented titles on PS2. The online features of Xbox are actually are minus. I'd rather he not be online yet.

Your friend is *sorta* right.  There are more recent Teen/Adult oriented games on Xbox, but thats mainly due to a lot of PS2 ports.

Microsoft said the XBOX was oriented towards young adults before the platform even launched. Nintendo and the Gamecube are the most kid friendly.

Thats true, but my point was that the PS2 also has teen/adult oriented games. (with its fair share of kiddie stuff too, I'm sure).
