What do you do when the directx patch doesn't work?
« on: December 02, 2003, 11:13:03 am »
I have installed the direct x fix, I have also uninstalled the game and installed again, and put on the beta patch, but my game still won't work. If I do single player campaign I can get into the game, but everything looks...wierd. You can hear dialogue going on (it's the 1st mission of the klingon campaign), but you can't tell whats going on because the graphics aren't right. If you do a quick skirmish my computer just plain crashes and reboots itself. Any idea what on Earth is going on?  I've even tried putting in a different graphics card, my first was a geforce2 mx (not a great card, I know) and  tried a geforce 4mx, I was wondering if it could be the driver, so I got I reinstalled it off the nvidia sight, I even tried reinstalling directx 9.0b, and that didn't work either.  I don't understand what the problem could be.

If you install the Beta patch you don't need the DX9 fix, it is included. Installing the fix after that will mess things up. Other people have had graphics card issues. Once you get squared away with the right install, if you still have vid problems come back and someone will help you sort it out. I know people with your card can play so it can be sorted out. At this point you should probably start over again. Be sure to uninstall using the Add/Remove programs funtion to be sure everything is really gone.

I already tried all that.  I meant to say I have tried playing it with just the directx fix, I have also tried with the beta patch.  I did remove the game with add remove programs, and I deleted the directory that the uninstall did not remove, and it still will not work correctly.

If It helps, I'm using the Nvidia 4.13.0001.4109 Drivers, and my Card seems to run fine. What Drivers exactly are you using?

Also, what resolution are you at? and try setting your card to 16 bit instead of 32 Bit.

I'm using the 52.16 driver, and I already tried setting it to 16 bit and I've tried every resolution that the card supports and the games still doesn't work.

Put all your card settings to automatic, do not preset them...

You are using a Geforce 4 vid card.. the last Geforce 4 supported driver is the 40.72 driver from last November (2002)..

all drivers since then have been specifically for the FX vid cards, although some may work with the Geforce 4 cards, the Geforce 4 cards is not supported in the FX card driver sets...

if you wish to use a newer driver for your Geforce 4 vid card, then try downgrading your drivers 1 at a time  going backwards in version number until the game works correctly, however as stated above, the last official Geforce 4 driver made was in November 2002 and is listed as the Detonator 40.72. all drivers after this one is the FX card drivers and using them, you are taking risk of card damage and / or improper program operation.... Geforce 4 is just "technically" outdated and NVidia assumes that everyone has upgraded to FX cards by now after 2 years of them being out of production (except laptop version)... Laptop versions of Geforce 4 is supported by system manufacturer only.... however any driver after the 40.72 is not WHQL for the Geforce 4 card series...

Just FYI

hope that this helps...
