Doctor Who is to get a Buffy-style sidekick when he makes his TV return.
His new colleague will be a modern action heroine, according to writer Russell T Davies, who is reviving the sci-fi series for the BBC in 2005.

"A screaming girly companion is unacceptable now," he said in an interview for TV Times magazine.

The search is still on for an actor to play the new Doctor Who, with Alan Davies, Eddie Izzard, and Richard E Grant all linked to the role.

 Anniversary
Davies said he planned to make other changes to bring the new Doctor Who up to date. The Tardis will stay - but the Daleks may be under threat.

"I love the Daleks, but I wouldn't load the series with lots of old monsters. We want to make brand new ones," he said.

Fans of the series celebrated its 40th anniversary last month. The show first appeared on the BBC in 1963, with William Hartnell taking the lead role.

By the time it was taken off air in 1989 it had become an institution, with Sylvester McCoy becoming the seventh actor to play the Doctor.

In a recent Radio Times poll, Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Anthony Head was voted favourite to become the latest TV time lord.

At the time of posting the BBC poll results were:

Anthony Head   38.15%
Alan Rickman     26.96%
Stephen Fry       11.68%
Alan Davies        17.97%
Ian Richardson    5.23%

1224 Votes Cast

So who would you vote for?

Who would make the best doctor?
Anthony Head
Alan Rickman
Stephen Fry
Alan Davies
Ian Richardson

Don't know the actors except davies. Dr Who had an assistant named leela or leeta at one point and she certainly wasn't a screaming girlie type. He had to constantly restrain her from stabbing people (not always successfully IIRC).

Ah, yes. Thanks for the reminder He looks rather like he'd make the doctor's timelord nemesis in most of those more than the good doctor himself. (Of course that may be typecasting but...)

I can see the scene now as Doctor Who tries to defeat his enemies the lift door opens and inside is the doctors assistant strapped to a chair.  Upon closer inspection there are some words written on the assitants top....

"Ho Ho Ho, Now I have a sonic screwdriver too!"

A Buffy style companion? Sounds like Ace, the  McCoy companion.

Incidentally, Who fans should check this out.

Hey Storm, did you ever catch a Buffy episode? Anthony Head played Giles, Buffy's Watcher in that series.

I caught parts of it. But could not follow the series for one reason or another. I'm considering buying it on DVD at some point. One thing that kept me away was the way people were obsessing over the series. It disturbed me a bit. I somewhat overreacted. Plus I was incredibly busy most of the time overseas.

Rickman. Hmmm.... now there's an interesting choice. I guess I wouldn't be opposed to that.
