what's the deal with the Galaxy class studio model vs her Schematics???
They do not match
I was Watching TNG tonight and noticed that the Enterprise was WAAAAAY  sleeker in its profile(almost like it was longer) than in the schematic...I mean even the nacelles where longer...At first I thought nah it was just me, but My friend noticed it too...So has there been a sleeker TNG model of the Enterprise that was used???
was it a miscalculation by the model builders??? Similar to the Sovie model and the Sovie in Nemesis???
Has anyone else noticed this too

That;s because there were at least TWO physical models made for the ship to film TNG.....for the first season we had the 10-foot long "sleek" ship which had the aztec panelling only painted on, but for season 2, starting with that episode about the supernova, the scientist, Wesley and the nanites (dang, can't recall the title) they used a 4-foot long model that had different details, and RAISED aztec hull panelling. If you notice from that episode onwards, shots of the ship become darker as it should be in space if you think about it....whereas for all of season 1 when they used the 10-foot model the ship was way too brightly lit from all around.

Yes, so both the Ent-D and the Ent-E recieved "upgrades" in looks after the first season or movie, but for the Ent-D footage of the original 10-foot model was recycled in episodes throughout the remainder of the series, like they did for TOS when they had 2 different models, a small one and a big one, and the big one went through changes starting with the episode "The Corbomite Maneuver". Confusing eh? Ahhhhhh.........we're Trekkies, we're used to it.

Hmm. Interesting. I never knew this. So were the proportions of the two models different then, as well?

Details like lengths of this or that may have been changed on the 4-foot model, I don't have solid info on that. The major difference was the raised hull pannelling.

I see. Makes one wonder how you could ever do an 'accurate' version of some of these ships when, even in their canon incarnations, different versions are floating around.

sometimes different cameras on differently scaled models cause perspective to skew. This could account for the variations in appearence of the model. I believe the proportions for both sets of models were the same. but that due to differences in scale and variations in lenses they appear to be off.

If you think about it, Star Trek: TNG started in 1987 and ended in 1994. During those years, technical effects advanced by leaps and bounds. Just look at the pilot episode, "Encounter at Farpoint" and then view the last, "All Good Things" for a really neat comparison. Everything looks so much better. The differences in the portrayal of the Enterprise is quite striking.

For the Ent.E, I read in ST: The Magazine (when it was still around), that due to time constraints and such, they were not able to get the "look that the designer wanted, but when Nemisis came around, he was able to make the slight changes to get the ship to what he envisioned. From what the article said, they draw up the plans, then send them to ILM; at ILM they start the process of making the model, adding details as they go, after consulting with the design team. As such, what is on screen can be very different than what was originally planed, and the drawing and schematics don't always reflect the changes, therefore, differences from one "set" to another.

One way to look at it, it keeps ya on your toes, and opens the door to artistic license as far as making a model that you're happy with.

I love the Galaxy class,,,by far (to me) the most beautiful TNG Fed ship
And it is a shame the the schematic proportions donot exactly match

Thanks for the info...but you forgot the Ent-D in generations was too a different model then both of the others

Nah it was season 3 when  they introduced  the smaller more detailed model. The main reason for doing so was that with the introduction of the 10-forward set in season2 they realised the original model didnt match up with the set, as the Ent D was originally designed to be only 1deck thick around the rim of the saucer. Obv the 10-forward set is meant to be a second lower deck on the rim due to there only being the lower set of windows.  Basically the 'sleeker' look gave way  to realism. I believe it was about mid way thru the season they started to use the new model.

Oh and btw the model used in generations isnt a totally new model.. its the original large model from season 1. They totally re-detailed it for the more high res movie cameras, eg  they totally re-did the aztec and added sensor pallets around the rims etc (note they also did the same for the Nebula model to represent the Farragut). They needed that model cuz its the only one that seperates, and the smaller model had been converted into the 3-necelle future enterprise for All Good Things. Oh and some scenes used a CGI model, such as the scene where the Enterprise warps off intercept the bird of prey in the veridian system.

It was called Evolution and it was the beginning of the 3rd season, not the second.
