MP3 Players versus Minidisk players
« on: November 25, 2003, 08:07:32 pm »
I am thinking about buying a minidisk or MP3 player. I have a CD player, but I would like something smaller, that holds more song that I can take with me to the gym.

Does anyone know anything about these things? I would appreciate some advice or suggestions. I am leaning towards the MP3 player since it can't skip, but I don't want to spend more than $150 or so.

I prefer MP3 Players to CDs. I don't care about claims of skip free play. I like the idea of no moving parts. Portable CD players tend to ruin CD surfaces rapidly. There are no such concerns with MP3 players. MP3 players are smaller, more rugged and water resistant. I prefer solid state mp3 players over minihard drive based ones. They hold enough music to conduct a two hour work out and hardly anyone actually works out that long anyway. changing the play list does not intail burning a new CD. Rio makes good and cheap players. I've had my rio600 for a few years and am generally happy. The biggest problem was driver support because they tend to drop support rapidly when they go to a new model. However, I was able to get it to work with WMP9 which saved it from the scrap heap. Solid state mp3 players are the way to go for workouts. I take mine on hour long runs. They don't consume batteries fast, don't skip and don't destroy disks and you don't have to worry about a failing hard drive or moving parts.

But the special purpose he mentioned is athletics. For that solid state memory mp3 players are ideal. If long playlists beyond a couple of hours are your target then other storage solutions become more desireable. But I would not want to run 10 miles with a disk or hard drive based system. hanging a player off a exercise machine or putting one on the book holder can be detrimental to the wallet. They cannot withstand much abuse. Athletics entails major abuse.

mini disc players are great devices . I don't think they're what you need.

Solid State mp3 players are the way to go.

Check out this mp3 player.

http://reviews.designtechnica.com/review22_main108.html

Its small. Compact. 10 hours of playback on one AAA battery. 128 mb of storage, only takes about 3 minutes to load your music onto  Any that'll give you what?- about 2 hours of music?

This player can be hung around your neck it is that small and light.Or on a keyring.

At  $ 114.99 its not a bad deal either.

Its one I really want for myself too

One of these days...

Thanks Guys. Your notes have been very helpful. I work out for about 3 hours (2 hours on weights and 1 hour in the pool). I will have to check out some MP3 players and see which ones can load up some cool music.

I saw some MP3 players at Costco and I was surprised at their size. They are small things, which is cool. I'd like it to be small so it does not get in the way.
