Finally caught it this past weekend (braved a foot of snow to do so  ).

Having read all 20 of the novels (up to #13 on second go-around) I was prepared to hate it, especially since they started with novel #10 (The Far Side of the World) and drastically changed the plot. I was afraid of another  Two Towers - great action and visual effects, characters and storyline remade in somebody else's image.

Well the plot IS different -  (SPOILERS) it was an American frigate in the book (it takes place a bit later, during the War of 1812), and the crews end up stranded together on one of the Galapagos islands. Of course the movie plot is more exciting, and that's what you need to sell the movie. The book itself on screen probably would have been a tad dry, even though as a book it is thoroughly entertaining. So the made-up story I can deal with, although I am saddened that we might never see books 1-9, some of which have some very spectacular battle scenes, among other goodly stuff.

What I really really really liked was how accurate the characters were. Very much of the books is illustrated in such small things as Aubrey's weevil joke, Maturin's anger and disappointment at missing out on the Galapagos, Joe Plaice's skull being trepanned on the deck, Killick's constant bitching and steadfast devotion, and everyone's devout worship of Nelson (to the puzzlement of Maturin). Even minor characters such as Plaice and Awkward Davies were done justice.

All in all, two thumbs up.

I had a chance to go see Master and Commander this weekend, but chose to go see The Last Samurai instead.  Looks like I'll have to wait for it to come out of DVD because the only other movie i'll be seeing in the next month or so is going to be RotK.

It's worth the 9 bucks Doggy. Better yet catch a Sunday matinee, it's a perfect movie for a rainy Sunday.

Besides "Admiral" Wifey should like it.

It was a mix of "Far Side of the World" and "Beat to Quarters", the Hornblower novel.

Except for the O'Brian characters, it was virtually the same story as Beat to Quarters.

Nevermind that, it was one of the best movies I'd seen in a long time. I liked the portrayal of society on the edge of abandoning dogma and superstition (too bad the pace has been slow since the 1800's   ) in favor of science and reason.

Don't get me wrong...I really want to see it.  Even the TSU2000 (The Spousal Unit 2000) wants to see it.  It's just that I think I can sneak away to ONE more movie during the next 30-45 days or so and I'm going to spend that one on RotK...heheh.

As it is, I'll likely be leaving her and our new baby in the hospital to gho see it....heheh.

Who else here has seen this film?  I found it to be absolutely stunning and everything I thought a sea battle in 1805 would be like!  Although that scene where the kid gets his arm cut off...oh boy!  and then him leading the boarding charge into the gun deck of the Acheron....

I loved that movie...

I thought it was great.  I liked the part when they all get drunk at the captains table!  They must have Klingon blood!

I haven't seen It yet, But I do want to. Unfortunatly, I lost the coin toss with my wife, so we'll see Haunted mansion first.

all the same, everytime I think of this movie, I recall Leno's joke .

something to the effect that both ships are 100's of miles from home, The Brits are outgunned, outsized, out manned etc. by the french, and still manage to win.

It's nice to know somethings haven't changed over the last 200 years.

Anyway, I'll get around to seeing It as soon as I can.

I liked it, but didn't love it. A tad slow, and I didn't quite connect with the characters (at least in the same way I did with the A&E Hornblower series).

However, it's intelligent, it's truer to the era than most, and the ship battles are spectacular. I don't know how true they are to the novels, but I suspect most people here would enjoy it.

I'm still hoping to get the Hornblower series on DVD eventually. I really enjoyed those shows.

Man...talk about a devastating loss!

Thankfully, my wife no more wants to see Haunted Mansion than I do (which is to say, not at all).
