phone jacks
« on: November 23, 2003, 05:51:20 pm »
Recently, I had Qwest install a second line. They  unfortuneately did not bother installing the wiring or leads between the phone box outside and my phone jack. I have referrenced rather detailed help pages about what to do, yet none of them make reference to a second box labelled Bell System 305a2 that acts as interface between my four lead cord and the eight lead cord that comes out of the phone box. I don't suppose any of you know how the wiring in the bell system box is supposed to go for second line attachment.

screwed up? technically not, qwest with basic service is only responsible for the box they installed, the second, much older box below that, that acts as a connection point between the eight lead cord that hangs down from the box, and the four lead cord that goes between that second box and the house interior, isn't part of their responsibility at this point.

the eight lead cord has four set of wires, with block and stripe color code variations. above, blue is connected to the first line, below blue is connected in some arrangement that includes three caps where you push the wires in, the red cord, and the black cord.

in that second box, as well, the green cord and the red cord are under a single screw. As I saw no help page that mentioned that second box, or how to wire such a interface between four lead and eight lead cords, I left it alone for the time being.

Skawpya, it would probably be best if you had Qwest come back or bring in some other professional and have the additional wiring done by them if you are not comfortable doing it yourself. I will say that Qwest did drop the ball by not being clear that their responsibility ends at the network interface box and that any further wiring is yours.

Don't worry S, the company I invested in, CACS, their specialty is R&D and deployment of wireless broadband communication for other companies to use in their services. I envision the day will arrive when we have wireless transfer rates that match or exceed home cable transfer rates. It is already a fact, more people are going wireless phone and internet access every day, and the technology will only get better. Think of the possibilities, can you imagine your P/C being connected to a wireless internet connection? You could use it in the car (as a passenger I hope, lol), anywhere you wanted!

All I can say for now is do what others suggested if you do not feel comfortable, get outside help in getting your lines fixed, but also remind Qwest that they dropped the ball in not explaining everything to you from the get go, you might get a pro-rated rate for the days that you did not have access.
