The Klingons and Romulans, having lost their direct route to one another through captured Federation territory that had since been recaptured, had initiated "Operation Nutcracker", an operation whose intention it was to wipe out the Tholian Holdfast once and for all with a combined Klingon-Romulan attack. Operation Nutracker was succeeding and the Holdfast was on the verge of its final battle when the 312th arrived. They brought with them an unusual and powerful device called the webcaster, a system that could throw up a temporary free-standing web instantly up to 30,000 km from the ship. When the Klingon and Romulan attack on Tholia began, the ships of the 312th, which they were not familiar with, stood in their way. Webcasters caught them totally off-guard and the attack failed, with the Klingon-Romulan alliance breaking down shortly thereafter. After that, the Neo-Tholian ships served as the flagships of all the active Tholian fleets, providing a powerful new defense of the Holdfast.
