Two Towers: Extended Edition (Spoilers)
« on: November 19, 2003, 03:54:57 am »
For some reason after viewing this, I felt as though I should be sitting back in bed and taking a smoke. And I'm as stridently anti-smoking a bloke as you're lilkely to find. :-)

Of the forty-five minutes of extra footage, a lot of little things and additions work (especially a five minute flashback sequence involving Boromir, Faramir, and Denethor, and a Faramir-Gollum scene near the conclusion), a few don't (the pipeweed scene is a little misplacec) but all in all it's pretty magnificent package, and I've barely cracked the commentaries and other extras.

I've already bought the regular version of TTT.  But will probably pick up the extended version also.  Some of the highlights that I saw on the regular version make it look like they put in new scenes that will make the movie much better.

Finished watching it yesterday, and I have to say the Extended Edition feels a lot closer to the book. Even the made-up Denethor, Boromir and Faramir scene worked very well (although Faramir's flip-flop makes even less sense now).

I especially liked the scene at the end of the Hornburg, when Saruman's retreating army runs smack into a forest of Huorns. (For some reason omitting that bothered me.) Crunchy!

The additional entmoot scenes also flesh out the Ents a little better; I counted at least three times Treebeard says "now don't be hasty" as opposed to one. Sadly this also makes his flip-flop make even less sense.

I guess it would have been too much to hope for for the EE to have Faramir and Treebeard have their correct character, get rid of the stupid Indiana Jones cliff scene and the stupid Nazgul-in-Osgiliath scene. But overall I thought it was a better movie than the 3-hour version.

That scene wasn't exactly made up. IIRC there is mention of that type of conversation in the Appendix on Gondor. I seem to remember Merry came across an account of it in his research after The War of the Ring. You're right about the flip-flop of Faramir, but at least we now have a true motivation for Faramir to go to Osgiliath at all. Trying desperately to please a parent is an oldy, but goody in plot devices. I still think it wasn't needed and I hope PJ expands on these scenes in ROTK (at least the EE) to make it more worthwhile for Faramir. In this version we at least got to see why Faramir was motivated and then reformed of the idea to give the Ring to his father. Lets hope it wasn't for naught.

Yes, a definite improvememnt. Any more Ent scenes will always meet with my appoval. They were my favorite characters in the books.

I don't agree on the flip-flop here. That is the way it happened in the book (albeit much abridged). The Ents were going to ride it out as always and then changed their minds when Sauraman attacked the forest in ernest.

To the cliff scene - Yes it is an addition, but was used to flesh out and upgrade the love triangle (Aragorn, Arwen and Eowyn) which this story (in cinematic form) sorely needs. They have to get the teenage girls in there somehow!

Overall it is a great improvement and I am very pleased. Can't wait to see it in the theater!!

Watch all the additional documentaries and they explain why some scenes were done one way, changed, etc. After that it makes a lot of sense to what they did even though it wasn't true to the books.
