I was trying out one of the tutorials in my new Photoshop book and made
this. Kinda looks like a print from a photo gallery.

Yeah, they work.  Not sure why right off hand, but the B&W photo fails to recreate the whisper-white looks it is trying create. Its the look you get when you use a gold reflecter, B&W film, a red filter, and diffused low angled back light. It gives the skin a glow that isn't usually picked up in B&W.

Oh sheesh, there I go, rambling again.

The second image is spot on.

Best,
Jerry

Yikes..I know what it is--it's the eyes. You need more light in the eyes.

Ahhh, coffeee, the wonder drug for the working masses.

Hey guys,

Andy - Yes, that's my daughter. Even though the quality of the pic isn't that good for some
reason that is my favorite pic of her. There is "something" about the expression on her
face and the look in her eyes that just speaks to me. Guess it's a dad thang.

Toasty - I understand what you are saying. The whites just don't pop out like it would in a real
b&w photo. I'll play around with it and see if I can lighten the eye area.

Cool Ron, you should be proud she looks like a very nice lil girl. And if you took that photo then you should consider trying pro, its a very good shot.
