Anyone recommend a good video capture card?
« on: November 19, 2003, 10:43:52 pm »
Been sifting through some of the manufactures sites complete with their "can do anything plus more" claims. Sifted some user feedback sites/forums with their conflicting "This sucked more than just my wallet" and "This is the best thing since God" stories. Might as well get a fresh perspective. Any of you out there in Taldren OT land have experience or opinion on video capture cards?

P.S. Just need a card that can take a signal in from either a Camcorder with S-Video or a VCR with composite connectors and burn it to a CD recorder.

Hard to say, last 3 video cards (including current) have had capturing. I was starting to think it was a standard feature. My next card, the GeforceFX 5900 Ultra will also have it. What kind of setup are you going to use it with?

Without having to go broke, ATI is ok.

The system currently is -

FIC AD11 motherboard, Award BIOS, 266 FSB
  Athlon Thunderbird 1.0 GHz
5 PCI slots (3 open), 1 AGP slot
  1 (Kingston KVR 266x64c25) 256MB DDR DRAM PC2100 in slot 1
  1 (Kingston KVR 266x64c25) 512MB DDR DRAM PC2100 in slot 2
  USB 1.1
Western Digital 60GB 7200 rpm ATA100 Hard Drive
Creative 12X DVD ROM
A-Open 12x10x32 CD-RW
32MB Leadtek nVidia GeForce 2 Pro TV-out (AGP)
Creative Sound Blaster 5.1
Cable modem through Ethernet connection

My priority in choosing a video capture card is the ability to move VHS tape data down from a VCR using just composite Audio & Video connectors, next the ability to move S-VHS data down from a camcorder through its S-Video connector. I would be burning the data to CD as VCD format, eventually planning to buy a DVD burner.

I wouldn't mind but do not need the extras most cards have such as TV tuner and FM radio. Also wouldn't need the video capture card to replace my current video card. As for software, what I've seen from user replies is that every manufacturers software sucks in some way and there are plenty of good independant programs available.

If you go with an All-in-wonder type of card from ATI, you would not need your current video card.

Me, I prefer Nvidia, but that is just a personal preference. I don't have any video capture needs.

I believe that ATI also has a USB Capture devise that would do the same thing. I still have my old Dazzler that plugs into my printer Port. It was pretty good, and had the features you requested. I'm sure they Prob. Have a firewire version now.

Go with something from Pinnacle Systems with firewire, if possible.

I'm looking for a USB video capture device also.  My wife's laptop has a DVD burner on it, but no video capture devices.  It has both Firewire and USB ports on it so I can go with either interface.
