resizing a hard drive

I was just wondering if it is possible to change the partition size on a hard drive with Win XP. I have a laptop that I'd like to change from one 40Gig drive to a 30Gig and a 10 gig. I also do not want to reinstall everything. Is this possible to do without loss of data? Thanks.

I think the answer is yes to the dual boot, but I don't know if you can do it after installation.  Here's a link to MS's XP help pages: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;winxp&Product=winxp

I know that I can do a dual boot if I have two partitions. Actually that is what I really want to do with this. My problem is I'm already using the entire 40 gigs for the XP partition. I was wondering if it is possible to resize the already used partition so I can make a second one for another OS. The one thing that I am not going to do is reload everything. I hate doing that and I have no way to properly back everything up anywaay. Thanks.

If you can get hold of a copy of Partition Magic, that program can partition if there is already data on the drive. However, I haven't used it myself... and anything like that I would imagine requires a great deal of caution in case something goes wrong.

There is a program called Partition magic which should be able to do the job.  I have never used it or XP so I cannot say for sure.

I use Partition Magic (made by Powerquest) on a regular basis, and it works very well for what you want to do.

Some tips:

1) Back up your data and / or make an image of your machine before you start - if Partition Magic craps out while working with the main partition, you'll be reinstalling everything.  It doesn't happen often, but I have seen it happen.

2) Use your favorite disk utility to check the drive for errors before you start.

3) Do not create partitions with Partition Magic.  Use it to resize or move partitions, but use the regular disk utilities for whatever OS you plan to use to create the new partition in the empty space.
