Rom BoP for Lost Era (WIP)
« on: November 08, 2003, 05:22:39 pm »
Decided it was time to make the Rom BoP for the Lost Era...it's easier than the others and gives me some time to get into doing the Melak...damn the curse, full speed ahead!!

Here's a couple of pics of the mesh...what do you think? She comes in at 1948 polys.

Looks great!

Good job on keeping the poly count reasonable too.

Speaking of Romulans,

Kt'Hyla has a bunch of TMP Romulans that might fit into your Lost Generation Mod too. If you drop him a line and can convert LWO to .MOD we can have some more Romulan ships ready to go for Both GaW and your Mod.

Kt'Hyla wrote: "Wow you guys have a lot in the works... Go a head with the shuttle conversion, just remember to mention me somewhere in there. And posting a link on the Taldren forums is okay, never know who's going to to find what useful. Just remember to leave a note that if someone want's to convert something to SFC to contact me first. Ditto for whomever want's to convert the older Roms, I like to keep track of where everything's zipping off to . My older Roms are meant to be TOS, rather than Pre-TOS, although by that time most of them were getting a little long in the tooth anyhow...

In a day or two I'll be releasing my Romulan D'Vas BCH, another original of mine, might make a good addition to GaW. "

Qapla!

I'll give it a shot...I have the .lwo importer for max, thanx to Atheorhaven. Anyone (Alec?) know if it will save the mapping? Or I could just import to MS3D...still have that on my hd. Either way, I'll give it a go...it'd be a whole lot easier than building/texturing them me own self.

Now for the BoP...when I start on the textures, should I give it an aztec plating, or go with just a plain gray? And what color should the bussards be?

Aztec becoause of the timeline...and probably green bussards, as the old TOS one has Blue ones...and this is  a later variant right???

Unless its an LWO importer other than the one on my site, it doesn't save mapping. If it is a different one, I'd love a copy of it!

However, I have Deep Exploration which will convert to .3ds and save mapping. When imported into max all you have to
do is select polys by material and reassign the appropriate materials.

This is the method I used to convert the one or two Mackie models I did way back. Since Alec has been converting Mackie's .lwo files I'd assume he has a good solution as well if not the same one.

PM or email me and we can discuss it more if you like.

Excellent Bop, BTW.
You meshers just kill me. Don't know how you do it. lol

Pata, the one I have is either the one on your site or the one on Alecs...if same, then there ya go. I'll chk into it, as I have that, Deep Exploration and MS3D...just need to get the Assimsoft exporter for that.

OK, now for the texturing...green? The BoP was gray...but it is supposed to be for the Lost Era. OK, here's some speculation...After the encounter with the Enterprise, the Romulans realized they were still behind the Federation technologically. When they made the trade with the Klingons and aquired M/AM drives, they set about re-fitting the BoP. With the new engines, the power available allowed better, more effective use of the cloak. Realizing that the Plasma weapon was better as an assault weapon against bases and such, they re-armed them with disruptors. In order tell them apart, and to go better with the new fleet scheme, they painted them green.

Sound plausible?

Makes sense. And green looks better than gray, too. IMO

I'd guess that the influence of the Kilink tech trade would still have some influence in this time period. Not so much actual Klink tech as the Roms taking the Klink tech to the next step. Things like impulse units and nacelles might still look a little
Klingon in this era. Where as in the TMP era in many cases the tech  was Klnik and by TNG era the Roms had progressed on there own enough that their tech looked wholely their own.

Or maybe I'm talking through my hat and should shut up. lol

Did a wee lil' bit on the textures...been working (damn retail at xmas season ). Is the right shade of green ya think? Also, for bussards. I think it will good...just not sure if I should add the bird on the bottom, or make it more modern, i.e. no bird? I was thinking of leaving off the bird and doing Rom Empire logo in a few strategic, and spotlighted, locations. My thinking is, the pre-TOS ships are green...Masao has them with a bird...Enterprise has them w/out. So, I see the BoP from TOS, with the bird, as being an experimental ship...line ships don't have the bird. And, this is a re-fit of the TOS BoP, having been upgraded with Klingon style M/AM reactors. Also, rather than the plasma torp, it's been re-fitted with disruptors. That way, there's more power available to the cloak and engines, meaning it was a little better match for their neighbors.

Anyway, enough rambling. Here's the pics:

OK, a couple of more shots of the texturing...slow going as I'm unfamiliar with Roms and I'm flying by the seat of my pants. The designs on the saucer were an experiment and won't be part of the final job. I added impulse engines to the rear, as it always looked weird not having any. What do you think?

For a guy unfamiliar with Rommies you're doing a bangup job!

I agree this bird needs impulse engines, but perhaps not square as you have them.

Maybe round the sides and leave some green hull at the top and bottom?

Otherwise, lookin' great!

Thanx! And I'll give that a try...I was thinkin' it looked a little awkward(sp?), thanx for the suggestion.

To clarify something, I normally use a combination of PSP7 and PS7 when texturing, but this time I'm doing it all in PS7. I'm figuring a few things out, so don't be surprised to see "tests" as I go along. I don't really know how it's going to look until I get it applied and rendered out. I'm used to doing Feds (which I now have a better idea of how to do somethings...keep an eye out ) and it just seems too plain. I'm not too familiar with the types of paneling and other details should be present on a Rom. So, like I said, you may see some weird stuff as I go along.
