    Veteran's Day....11 NOV 2003

Being a veteran myself (USAF, 1973 - 1994), I would like to thank all those who have served, both the members and thier families.  I know what it is like to be separated for long periods of time, and I hope the times of reunion were wonderful.

If you are a veteran, please post your service dates..if you are a family member, your thoughts...

Thank you

Mike

US Army.  May 30 1984 to June 1, 2004. May our service men and women achieve lasting victory so that our fallen will not have died in vain. May they win so that no innocent has to die at the hands of crazed extremists. May they return triumphant that the world may become closer to the ideals of everlasting freedom, peace and prosperity. God speed that day. May we, the benificiaries of the brave and resolute warfighters of the past, never forget those who made possible what we enjoy now else our posterity may not share our fortune. I salute the veterans of the past and those of the present and those who will serve in the future. The Marines have a motto that is easily recognizable by all. Semper Fidelis. Semper Fi!  Always Faithful. It's spirit, though, is not unique to the valiant marines. All servicmen are always faithful. On special days like veteran's day,  memorial day and others celebrating victories we are reminded to be faithful in turn. Always faithful.

U.S. Army 1988-1995

3rd Armored Division, 1st Brigade (Ready First Combat Team)
DeWitt Army hospital
1st Cav, Ft. Hood (God, do not request a field unit in Texas if you are going through a divorce, and contrary to popular opinion, home is not always the best place to go during those times).

Gulf War: 1991

Engaged Tawalkalna Republican Guard Division

Later deployed to help with 24th Mech near Basra after ceasefire agreement at Safwan, Iraq

Near Khamisayah when our wonderful superiors blew stuff up without looking at the contents first, ooops, there went a chem weapons depot!

Humanitarion Aid mission for Iraqi refugees at Safwan airfield (yes folks, the evil Great Satan was flying refugees to Tehran and Saudi Arabia). That was one rare ribbon back then. Humanitarian Service Medal and Ribbon.

Proud war veteran and family has a history going back to our founding fathers of serving proudly (my ancestor is Sgt. Jasper, who in 1776 proudly raised the flag against the British after it had lain in the sand after being shot down, battle of Charleston, S.C.). My father himseld being a Navy flyboy who died a month before my birth, P5B-Marlin (Vietnam) stationed out of wonderful San Diego.

I thank all Americans who support me being a disabled veteran, and I give a proud salute to all active duty everywhere, as well as veterans. We live in the best country in the world people, let's try to keep it the best...

Well, if we're talking about family service records, my father was USN in the early 60s, and my Grandfather served in both WWI and WWII (lied about his age both times - lol).  Not sure about great grandfather - I haven't really done much in the way of genealogical research - but I know I had a great great uncle in the Prussian army (before he came to the US and married a crazy Irishwoman).

Pretty much every male on both sides of my family has done a stint in our armed forces.  I was actually the first one to not join the military and I was the first one in my family to graduate from college (my younger brother was the second).  Heh...I think we're still the only two who have been.  I'm guessing by brother's first daughter will be the next one, and then my first...hehe...but I digress.

I was an Air Force brat for the first 19 years of my life.  My dad was in Vietnam.  I've had relatives in the WWII, Korean WAr, Vietnam War...etc, etc...

We're mostly an Air Force family lately, though I had a cousin go Navy.  Prior to the air force coming into existance, we were all Army and Marines.

Thanks to you all for your present and past service...

Indeed, but I spent less then half my time stationed there actually AT "Planet" Ord.  Between rotations in Fort Sherman Panama and Fort Irwin I didn't get to spend nearly enough time enjoying Monterey Bay and Big Sur.

OK, I am tempted to respond, but I am not American. I hope that this doesn't intrude on anyone's sensibilities.

First and foremost, had it not been for those Veterans you speak of, WW1 and deffinitely WW2 would have been different.

I mean, does anyone REALLY believe that Englishmen, and Free French could have taken France on their own? ANYONE AT ALL? Didn't think so.

Or, maybe the Soviets would have stood their ground (and eventually dissolve into Russians+others), had it not been for the Americans on Europe, and the promise of even more of them, and even worse, if anything happened to them. Yea, right.

Again, thank you. Europe is now a peaceful place, but it wasn't, not 30 years ago.
Of course we Greeks have one big gaping wound, it is called Cyprus, but I do hope that it will be solved in peace.

So, honouring your own veterans, If I might be allowed to honour mine.

Great grand father's brother, Lt, Greek Army, died in what is now Ismir, trying to hold the line for more refugees to escape.
Grand father, Private in Engineering corps, built/destroyed same bridge 4 times in the war against the Italians.
--> Met Grandmother while both of them were in the mountains, in the resistance to end the German occupation. They were married when the war was over.
The other Grand father, he fought the communists on our communist insurrection, 1947-1949.
Father, He served as a Lt in Greek Artillery, 1964-1967
Uncle (mother's brother), Private, Greek Rangers, 1971-1974
Me, Sargeant, Gr. Air Force, certified in Rh-202, Artemis-30 (both AA guns), and anti-infiltration tactics, 2001-2003

Some of you may hate the army and all it stands for, I, for myself have been calling it interesting names sometimes while on foot patrol in the dead of the winter.

But consider this, You have NOTHING, if you are not willing to fight for it. Or if you don't others will do it FOR you so that your enemies won't do it TO YOU!.

I praise those man, and any thinking person should do the same.

My Grandfather was CO of the Iron Knights tank unit in WW II. I wanted to join the military to help but since they don't allow anyone that is disabled at all (other then seeing) I am out of luck. Can't even land a desk job in the military thanks to the discrmination to disabled people.

I wish to honor all vererans, past, present, and future for your committment and sacrifice. I am hoping to join the Navy after community college. I just wish to say that it brings me great comfort, and a great responsibility that people as fine as the veterans who have posted here are willing to defend the USA and it's allies.

Veterans have been misunderstood. They have been called Babykillers, morons, serial killers, (I don't want to continue here.) I just want to say that I fully admire, honor, and respect the service you gave, the sacrifices you accepted, and the hell you endured. I realze that Veterans recieve a lot of flack, but I assure you:

None of it was from me.

and I can't say this enough:

Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.

And GT-Keravnos: You defended your country. I am not a veteran myself(but I want to join the military) but I feel that you did do your part, and I want to thank you as well.

Supported the Brits into the Faulklands through Fort Ord, CA.....that was funny. I don't think many of them arrived combat ready. Seems they all wanted to "tan" under the Ca. sun......looked like lobster fest when they got back on the aircraft..

Carried our boys home after the bombing in Beiruit. Fallen heros all..............<S>

Caught in wargames in the med in an unarmed C-130.....what pencil beam? Destroyer? I never saw the pallet of toilet paper you are refering to......

Got reeeeaaall close to being grounded in Central America.....could have kissed a couple of Apache crews. Never knew they were even there until they started up thier chainsaws (lol) Thanks guys!

Operation Desert Shield.......that's enough, wifey says I have to come home and can't play in the sandbox with you guys any more....

I wish to honor all vererans, past, present, and future for your committment and sacrifice. I am hoping to join the Navy after community college. I just wish to say that it brings me great comfort, and a great responsibility that people as fine as the veterans who have posted here are willing to defend the USA and it's allies.
