We live in the land of the Ferengi, ladies and gentlemen. The promise of capitalism and 'free' trade. Market economics and the laws of supply and demand at work. Everything has a price and can be 'freely' traded in a 'freely' competitive environment. Competition spurs on growth and development. And the currency for the trade is money of course!
The greater a consumer is willing to pay for an item, the higher its demand, the higher the price will be.
Its why this planet produces enough food in total to feed itself over completely 3 times, and yet, one-third of the entire world's population is starving to death.
It's why 90% of the world's resources are controlled by 2% of it's population.
It's why there must be poor people, in order for rich people to exist.
It's why a first time offence on aggravated assault will get you a 6-month behaviour bond and a slap over the wrist, but credit card fraud will give you a jail term.
It's why no matter how much money you plug into social welfare, there will always be poverty and the ever widening gap between the 'have's and the 'have-nots'.
Ah yes, you can buy absolutely anything and everything is 'freely' available in a corporatised, privitised, capitalised world. Food, medical and health services, education, shelter, even your pet Mirak can have the best of living standards offered to him/her. Oh, just one teeny weeny small thing, so long as you can pay for it.
