No That is not the problem. That is for Windows XP. Windows 98 will run fine.
WHat is your video card maker and chip set also what version of driver do you have.
If you have NVidia and you got the lastest drive from the windows update site that drive is bad and you should go to NVidias web site to get the lastest. The bad driver is 42.16 I think. I know it ends in .16
I hope this helps.
Here is NVidia's web site. This is the driver update page.

It could be your vidoe drivers.. you either may need to update, or step backwards with your video card driver...

OR

it could be a piece of software running in your system background.. To disable software fron starting up with your machine that could cause SFC 3 to not work correctly, go to your Start Button, click on RUN, type in MSCONFIG, and click OK. In the pop up window, click on Start-up tab...

In the list below, the 2 things you MUST NOT uncheck is SCANREGISTRY and SYSTEM TREY.

the rest you can uncheck without having a problem. Try disabeling some of this software before dling drivers.... remember, after each program you disable, you will need to reboot your system before trying the game.

after unchecking everything you can, then I would go back to an earlier driver version for your video card, work backwards 1 driver at a time until it works correctly.

plus your system specs would be much appreciated.. as we know now is that you have Win 98se.

well i downgraded the driver back to the original spec when i got the pc the game runs yay but.......

before the main menu i get this message

No hardware-accelerated Direct 3D devices were found.
Switching to the reference rasterizer, a software device that implements the entire direct3D feature set but runs very slowly.

any ideas now guys?

What is happening is instead of using your video card to render 3d for SFC 3, it is using Direct X through your CPU.. this will drematically effect your game.. my suggestion is to get a new video card as the way you are running the game now will overtax your CPU and / or cause your game to lock up.. especially in multi-player games.... basically your CPU will get too many instruction sets, especially from those you are connected to.. as such, the game will be prone to locking up and / or you dropping from missions unexpectantly..

Which videocard are you running? and is it 100% Direct X 8.1 compatible and does it have 3d capabilities ?

For a list of tested cards, look in your SFC3\Docs\help\Readme.rtf file, it will list system requirements as well as what card types were tested, not all cards, but most cards... basically any card produced after the year 2002 should work.

Here's the problem I'm having....

I can't get the cd key to type in the box.  I get a beep everytime I try to type, nothing goes in the box.

I had the same problem with SFC2 as I'm having with SFC Orion Pirates, running windows XP.  I was able to register SFC2 but now Interplay is down for good, can't register, so this new cd is useless, I can't play the game.  Is there any option for me, or a fix for this problem?   I run direct x 9 and SFC2 works fine.  I did try the update patches for OP, didn't change anything.

Thanks for any help  you can offer.  I have a Sony Vaio with integrated Nvidia 32 mb video.

Sincerely,

Ken

I am sure Interplay will have there site up sometime. There is no need to register though just forfiet the registration process that is what I did at first and everything went fine however I did register later.I would suggest forfieting and registering later when asks you click forfiet and click later.
 I hope this helps
I you need to get a hold of Interplay thiere toll free number is 1-800-Interplay you will get prompt asking you what to do when you first phone them up.
 Good Luck .

a few people have had that problem. what you need to do Is locate the directory, and launch the game from the other EXE file. not the one that your short cut points too. I don't have my OP loaded right now, so someone else will have to give the exact name of the exe.

Thanks, I will try that when I get home.

BTW, Interplay may not be in business anymore.  Check out Gamasutra.com.

Did you read the

SFC3 Readme v531.rtf or the Reame.txt for v531 in your SFC 3 folder as stated in the install instructions.. it is listed as item number 8 in the install instructions..

In the event that yo failed to do that, I will post the trouble shooting instructions here...

-------------------------------------------------------

Window's XP Users : Right click on your desktop shortcut and select Properties. In the Properties pop up dialogue box, click on the Compatibility Tab, look near the bottom of the Dialogue box for "Disable Visual Themes" and put a check into the box next it. Click OK.

Players may experience CTD prior to mission loads. This may be caused by software running in the background, such as Logitech Mouse Dirvers, certain brands of Firewalls, Connection Accelerators, etc. It is recommended that you click on the Start Button, click on RUN, type in MSCONFIG and click OK. Then in the Pop-up Dialogue box, click on the START-UP Tab and uncheck everything that is absolutely not needed at system start up. The majority of times, on Windows XP machines, You can uncheck everything. On Windows 98 / ME, you must leave SYSTEM TREY and SCANREGISTRY checked, and the rest can be unchecked in most cases.

----------------------------------------------------------

I hope that this helps and please read and follow instructions that are given so that you can have an operational game.

How about this last item in the trouble shooting steps :

------------------------------------------------------

People also need to keep their Video Card drivers up to date from the Video Card manufacturer. Such as Geforce owners can go to the NVidia web site and check for latest version of drivers and Radeon card owners can go to the ATI web site for their drivers. Never get drivers from the Windows Update Website as they are known to cause problems when gaming. If you upgrade your drivers and you experience game problems such as crashing, then back step your drivers 1 version at a time until the game works properly. For some video card users, you may have to adjust your desktop color resolution to 16 bit, but only after exhausting the Driver Version methods. Laptops owners will need to check the manufacturer of their laptop for newer video driver versions.

------------------------------------------------------

or this item :

----------------------------------------------------------

Make sure you you are using Direct X 9.0b on your system. It is recommended to reinstall Direct X 9.0b on your system as many games will install components that may cause Direct X 9.0b to corrupt. Those not using Direct X 9.0b is urged to update to DirectX 9.0b for Multi-Player in Starfleet Command III as Direct Play components of Direct X 9.0b is not compatible with earlier versions of Direct X and may cause drops in missions, out of sync, or severe lag during game play. This is stated in the Microsoft Direct X FAQ. To update Direct X 9.0b, you can visit the Microsoft Web Site located at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx .

--------------------------------------------------------

or these

-----------------------------------------------------------

When installing Star Trek Starfleet Command III, Do not install DirectX 8.1 or Gamespy Arcade from the game CD, these items will corrupt Direct X 9.0b on your system.

Make Sure that your system is completely up to date from Microsoft Windows Update web site ( http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp ).

Before Installing the SFC 3 Patch 1.01 Beta 2 Build v531,  make sure that you DO NOT install the items below. The items below are designed for an unpatched game streight out of box (v464) and the items below are already included in the v531 patch, which means that installing the below items before or after the v531 patch will cause the game to corrupt when you install the patch.
A) SFC 3 DirectX 9 Fix
B) Nemisis Add-On Package
C) Borg Mini Compaign

----------------------------------------------------------

These are all listed in the readme file.

hope that this helps.

Have you run an Anti-Virus program? you can not patch the game while Anti-Virus is running, it will cause patch to corrupt.

also if you are still having problems, have you run Ad-Aware 6 or Spybot Search and destroy?

if not, it is possible your system is under attack by a hijacker or a trojan.

to clean up your system, you can follow the instructions i posted at :

http://www.nightsoft.net/effhq/IE.html

Hope that this helps.

I have just purchased SFC 3 and when I install it and try and run the game it keeps telling me I have not installed Directx 8.1. But, I have installed it. I am running Windows XP 2002, what am I doing wrong ??
