Has this ever happened to you?

Monday, Jan 4

I just bought a great new board game! I'm really excited about it. I hear it's really great...the best game ever! I haven't played it yet...the ink is still wet from coming off the presses yesterday...but I've seen pictures of other people playing it, and they looked very happy, so it must be good. Can't wait to play it!

Tuesday, Jan 5

Well, I just found out my game board is too big for my table, so I will have to buy a new table. That's OK, I needed a new table anyway. All of the games nowadays come with 36" wide game boards, so I would've needed to upgrade sooner or later.

Wednesday, Jan 6

I bought a new table! It is much bigger than my old one, and taller, too. A lovely dark oak. Of course, now all my chairs are too short and no longer match...guess I will have to get some more chairs, too, before I can see over the edge of the table to play. Drat.

Thursday, Jan 7

Well, the new chairs are here. Not sure what to do with the old ones...they are so short, nobody wants them. Oh, well. I tried out my game today...at last!...but ran into a few problems. The lacquer finish on my table is so slippery that the board keeps sliding off whenever I bump it even slightly. It's very frustrating, and makes it impossible to play a game in its entirety. I found a small piece of paper in the bottom of the game box that said that there is a known issue with finishes, and I should only use UNVARNISHED tables to play my game on. Dang, wish I'd known that before I paid all this money for my table. Oh, well, maybe they will fix it in the second edition...

Friday, Jan 8

I played the game last night, and it was pretty fun...when it wasn't crashing to the floor...but I noticed that some pieces seem to be missing. I tried calling the company to ask them to send me some replacement pieces, but the phone number in the manual was disconnected! Maybe directory assistance will know.

Saturday, Jan 9

Well, I finally found the phone number, after a zillion calls to directory assistance and a trip to the library, but now it's Saturday and no one is in the office. What a bummer...the weekend is finally here and all I can do with my game is sit and stare at it.

Sunday, Jan 10

Still bored. So far, this game hasn't been very much fun. I was going to have some friends over to play, missing pieces or not, but they got stuck in traffic. By the time they got here, it was too late to play. Oh, well, they cheat a lot, anyway.

Monday, Jan 11

Grrr! 2 hours on the telephone! Two long hours spent with a cramp in neck, listening to ads and persistent reminders of how important my call is to the company. (I guess it could've been shorter, but I had to keep hanging up and starting over whenever I failed the "can you find the button that connects you to the live person" quiz!)
But I finally got a real person. They gathered as much demographic data as they could from me before I sounded sufficiently annoyed to talk to. I then explained to them how my game was missing some pieces and they told me I probably lost them when it kept crashing to the floor. I assured them that this was not the case, but I am not sure they believed me. They insisted that I try setting up the game while I was on the phone (long distance) and count the pieces. I did, and finally got them to agree that I was, indeed, missing a few pieces. Finally, they reluctantly admitted that some games have been reported to be missing many of the same pieces that I could not find. (Apparently, I am one of the lucky ones...many people simply recieived an empty box!) They said they would be mailing out replacement pieces to all the game owners sometime next month, if I would care to wait. I told them I did not want to wait at all, I had already waited for a week to buy this game, and was not about to wait another month and I would like my money back. They said that they would be happy to refund my money, but unfortunately, could only give refunds to people who returned their games in the same condition as they bought them. Since my game was missing some pieces, and slightly dented from crashing to the floor so much, they could not accept it. I was screwed. Have a nice day.

Tuesday, Mar 5

Well, it's been two months, and my replacement pieces finally arrived. It took me a while to rearrange my table to accomodate all the new parts. Unfortunately, some of the new pieces don't fit right. I called the company about it, but they told me that they no longer manufacture the game, so they can no longer address my complaints. I guess I will just have to stack this one in the closet with the others.

Wednesday, Jun 4

The company that made my game just announced an exciting and much improved sequel to it, due out by next Christmas. It looks really great! Much better better than the original, if the pictures of it are any indication. Of course, it will have a much larger board, so I expect I will have to start shopping for a new table. Y'know, sometimes I get really tired of this nonsense. I can't afford to replace my table every time a new board game comes out. I wonder if computer games would be cheaper...

Damn man, you're not having much luck with games are you? Though on a selfish note it's nice to see that the universe takes the piss out of someone OTHER than me from time to time...

Though it's far too late, I'd have suggested you buy a large square of felt to place over the table in order to reduce board sliding. What game was it anyway?

So what's the sequel called? "Metaphor II: an expression which describes a person or object in a literary way by referring to something that is considered to possess similar characteristics to the person or object you are trying to describe"

Bit long...

Speaking of monopoly, if you are bored enough to read my post, then you may find this collection of articles regarding the disputed history of that game  interesting:
