I have two questions.
« on: November 08, 2003, 01:28:34 pm »
Question No. 1: I retextured a model of the Enterprise B by Moonraker with textures from Pneumonic81's Excelsior. Now my model of the Enterpise B has "Excelsior" printed on the hull. How do I modify the hull registry?

Here's a pic:

Question No. 2: What would I use other than Photoshop to work with textures? (P.S. it's gotta be freeware)

Not sure about freeware, but you can use PaintShop Pro. It's a lot cheaper, and works very well for texturing. IIRC, it's around $100.00 (US).

I don't know of any free program that can handle the curved text, straight yes but not curved. PSP can be bought on-line for around 60 dollars US, I did a search in Google and bought it from them for $54.76 total shipping and tax included.

Nice texturing by the way.

The other thing to do is see if anyone has blanks for that ships saucers, if they do I can change them in about 10 minutes.

Yes, there are blanks. Been on my site for months. I've got blanks for most of the P81 ships. Not the newest
versions he's done, but the generation just prior to all the ones he's done for BC & SFC III.
Look in the textures section.

IIRC, I've even got a registry tutorial for PSP users online. Been awhile since I looked.

Edit:  Just looked..........I actually have blanks for this exact version of the Excelsior. It's the one that says Knox/P81 Lakota. Have fun.

I don't need another graphics program but one that is for joining a model with texture images.

P.S. Thanks for leading me to the blank hulls Adding the appropriate text with Photoshop Elements 2.0 oughta be easy enough

you can do do curved text in powerpoint. then clipboard it turn it transparent (background)  and put it in whatever you use for doing the textures. Someone you know will have powerpoint perhaps as a last resort the library or aomething.

haven't got a clue. I just know you can do curved text in power point and transfer it to other progs of all sorts from paint to photoeditor to JASC stuff. I haven't got to do my own models or textures yet. That will come later. To much on my plate right now. I definitely have some ideas though.

Yeah, what he said I'd like to know what a texturer uses to texture a model that's fresh and untextured. I wanna know what a texturer would use other than the art an graphic design programs.

Ok if you just want to make changes to existing textures then MSPaint will do, and comes with windows. If you have a Scanner hooked up to your PC then you can use the program that came with it instead, usually a PhotoShop or PaintShop Pro lite. all these will work well until you wish to do a saucer registry, not many programs can do these well Power point can do it but it doesn't look as good as PhotoShop, Corel, or PaintShop Pro.

I use PaintShop Pro and it works well enough with out spending allot of money. If you have PhotoShop or Corel you already have a upper end program that will do more than you need. That covers making textures, except the time it will take to learn the program and how to do things. Make Aztecs for the backgrounds for the flat areas as well as the saucers sections to build on.

Applying textures to the model comes next. There are more programs out there then i know about but the only two I know most ppl use are 3DMax, and Milkshape. I don't know exactly how they work yet as i am still learning to do that. Milkshape and max can also be used to make the models as well as kitbash them.

I would suggest MilkShape and PaintShop if you have about 80 dollars to spend. They are good enough to start with an grow with. Also if you don't like it then at least you have not spent a fortune.

You will spend way to much time looking for tutorials to help you learn at first all I can say is they do help but so does the manual. It will take time but you will learn.

I know power point is a little rough getting the text to match  radially and you might have to clone the flat text dozens of times and stretch it many times before you get it right. But I'm used to having to use a screwdriver as a hammer.   I made a 600 page handout packet with all sorts of graphics cobbled together in three different programs to get all the effects I needed. Made it look professional too.
