Strategy help...
« on: February 13, 2003, 01:01:20 am »
I've been giving my brand-spankin' new SFC 3 a test run, and I seem to run into the same issue repeatedly. Basically, engagements go like this:
Approach at desired shield/primary/heavy weapons settings. Slow on approach. Circle until someone is destroyed.

So, obviously that got old real quick. Can some of you offer some tips that will a) make combat a better experience and b) make my combat a more effective experience (most fights take about 30 mins to complete for me).

Please be realistic, and if there's a name for your technique, I'm afraid you'll have to detail it out; I know what a Zimmelman is, but not much else (and you can't really do Zimmelman's in SFC 3 anyway).

Thanks,

If you're playing against the AI's, then thats about as strategic as it gets. Log on to D3 and try against human players, then you'll find that you last about 3 minutes. Thats when you have to come up with some ingenious strategies to defeat your opponent. Or failing that, try Gamespy and go 1v1 and practice some moves.......

If you're playing against someone good, you won't even last half that long.

strategies against the AI are numerous, but even still they seem repetative after a while. Here are my favorites:

1. Kaufman Retrograde: (I think that's the SFB name for it)  You aproach to almost weapons ange, then hit full reverse and keep your bow pointed at the enemy, pound him till he explodes.

2. Circle Jerk: Mount up with side facing weapons... you'll win a turning battle every time... just keep turning! (Learned this one from crappy D3 players...)

3. Warp-Hit-and-Fade:  Hit "evasive maneuvers"  close to weapons range, fire all weapons,  warp away. Remember to warp away at an angle so you keep the Angular Velocity up.

It all depends on what race you are playing.  Most of my battles are lasting under 5 to 10 minutes against the AI.  Here's a generic tactic against the AI that should lessen the battles drastically.  Pump up power to your Heavies, drop shield energy a little, and put reinforcment on the front shield.  Charge up your tractor, tractor the AI, and hold them steady whilst you pump them full of destruction.  Simple, easy, and speeds up battles.

If you don't like tractoring, remember to switch directions often and angle to hit the same shield every single time.  Make sure  your angular velocity is lower.  If you have a vessel that can fight at long range...make them come to you.  Speed away from them and force them to follow.  This is particularly effective if you are a rear firing ship overall.

If you want to be a warp boat, drop your shields almost entirely, and put it all in your weapons.  The reasoning, you warp a lot to get the best angle and force them to come to you...however...you will take a lot of hull damage.  Your reasoning is that you can take down a shield of theirs before they take down yours.  This is primarily effective where you have a forward firing ship against someone else who has the same...it is the most risky of the tactics because you will almost assuredly take hull damage, and you risk that with heavier hitting weapons, you'll be able to both take down their shields AND hull before they take down your hull alone.  Hard tactic to pull off, but if you do manage, you'll destroy them quicker.

Just a few little things to speed up your play.  I'm not going into a listing of all of the tactics as I don't want to spend hours typing here...those basic 3 though, should fare well against the AI even if they are less effective against a good player.

Try these two sites. Battleclinic has battle movies and ship loadouts and Starfleet Universe has been around since the first game came out. Both should have links to other SFC related sties.
