Connection Problems
« on: November 02, 2003, 03:27:24 pm »
Grrrrr.  Linksys BEFCMUH4 Cable Gateway...Machine is in DMZ....Port detective shows all ports opened. Even manually entered the IP in the SFC3 ini file and the game STILL won't connect to the dynaverse 3 server OR the beta server. I even went so far as to reinstall the game. The problem is NOT in my connection. The ports are opened. The problem is in the direct play test host (as usual). Now it seems strange to me that I can connect to every other  online gaming server INSTANTLY (i.e. Dungeon Siege, Everquest, etc) but I can't connect to this one. What is even odder is that I did connect with this one before Roadrunner installed the firmware update but now I can't. This direct play test host is a bunch of crap and is 99.99999% of the problem people have connecting with this game. They need to do away with it and start letting us connect like all other servers do. Of all of the online games i have ever played I can honestly say that this one has been the buggiest and most frustrating of them all. The ports are wide open and there is no excuse whatsoever why i should not be able to connect.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
BTW My SFC Dynaverse 3 Server is connecting and running just fine according to the log viewer..and it is the same machine i am running the game on. AF Unmodded Server.

Hardware:
Dell Precision Workstation 650
Dual 3.20 Ghz Intel Xeon Processors, 1MB L3 Cache
4GB DDR266 SDRAM NECC
ISP: Roadrunner
Modem: Linksys BEFCMUH4 Cable Gateway

If the ports are opened and your PC is in DMZ then the required ports are being passed through the firewall right past your DMZ. Put your PC back behind the firewall, where those ports are being directed to.

This particular gateway is shipped with all ports opened by default. I used to connect with this identical configuration. The only change is the firmware upgrade performed by time warner. Dungeon Siege utilizes the exact same ports as SFC3 but i connect to their server just fine. Therefore it must be something unique to SFC3 that is causing this. When I place the machine behind the DMZ I cannot even get my server to connect (or the game). Opening the special application ports doesn't help either. Even the manufacturer of the router is at a loss to explain why this is. I guess I'll just have to find another game to play.  Also, there are no firewalls at all other than the router's. I have the xp firewall off. Placing the machine back behind the DMZ and opening the appropriate special application ports should be all that is required....but it doesn't work. I have been doing online games a long time and I am not new to these type hassles but .....sfc3 is, by far, the worst connection interface I have seen in a long time. Not all game buyers are tech savy enough to deal with these type issues and I see from these forums that I am far from being the first to have a problem with the directplay test host. The game connects to their server, it sees my correct WAN IP address then the direct play test host starts its connection crap. It is a shame that Activision and Taldren have pretty much abandoned us. This issue should have been fixed long ago.

Post your ports that you using, there was a  misprint about the ports and it could be what's holding you back. I've dealt with all sorts of problems and it's usually something simple. I will see if I can find the correct list of ports but hopefully somebody will catch it when you post it.

well 6073 and 2302-2400 are the primary concern but that is irrelevant. The machine is unfirewalled and is in the dmz...every port on the machine is opened with this configuration so game specific ports are unimportant. I have ran port detective and i know for a fact that these ports are opened...In fact I am hosting a Dungeon Siege Game on the microsoft Zone server right now using these same ports.

Mabye I read this wrong but are you trying to run an SFC3 server and the SFC3 game itself on the same machine with the same ip?
