Mod problems
« on: October 29, 2003, 10:44:59 pm »
Ok I give..... Help!!   I have tried Dominion Wars Mod, TNZ4 and Chris Jones Mega Mod.....for some reason they all lock up and freeze or I get an unhandled exception error.  This happens when an enemy ship is about to explode or when I toggle thru enemys with the y key,the unhandled exections I can live with but the freezing up is driving me crazy.   I still run on a Raedon VE video card, could that have something to do with the freezing???   Any help, hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated..   Thank you in advance...........Im all ears         .......  Uhm, two Q's. First off, are you using the beta patch and second, what's your config such as OS, video card driver version, DirectX version? Also some hardware info such as CPU and RAM.

The problem is most probably your Radeon card.. SFC 3 works best with Geforce as SFC 3 was built on the Geforce series cards... come to think of it.. most games work best with Geforce cards... the issue usually occurs when the video drivers are poorly written and / or released untested on a wide variety of games (even if Microsoft WHQL's the driver) which is the main problem of ATI cards (not tested on a large variety of games for stability before release.)

but back on topic.... for ATI Radeon series

here is a check list for you to try...

First and foremost, make sure you are using SFC 3 Beta 1.01 build 500 patch and DirectX 9.0b, and Windows is completely up to date from the Windows update Web Site..

the Beta patch can be found on my web site at http://www.nightsoftware.com/effhq/sfc32.html

make sure you read the entire descriptions of the downloads before getting any..

now check your Game settings for use with the ATI card by this list.. do 1 at a time until the game works correctly...

1.)  Find your SFC3.exe file, right click on it, select properties, click on compatibility tab, make sure everything is unchecked.. click OK

2.) Lower your screen resolution to 16 bit color

3.) Revert back to the 3.6 catalist driver, if that don't work, try the 2.6 driver.. then finally the 2.3 driver

4.) lower screen resolution to a setting below your current resolution (pixel setting like 1280x1024 or 800x600)

5.) use the SFC3Setup.exe to set game screen resolution to match your screen setting...

if none of these correct the problem, then recheck your system specs to what is listed on the game box. It is best to use a system that exceeds the minimum requirements as it will allieviate some of the problems with a game...

hope that this information helps...

I suggest upgrading to Direct X 9 for a start, your on ME, which is always a downside. Anyway, I'd go with what was stated above, try different Graphics Card drivers.

I very much appreciate all the info and help,,I will follow the instuctions and suggestions and see how it goes.....and if all else fails I guess its time to ditch the Radeon VE and get a Geforce.  Will make sure I have Direct X 9 for sure and if not I will update

You definitely need to upgrade Directx.  You said you were running 8.0.  I thought (dangerous as that is for me) that SFC3 required minimum 8.1 (which is why it was included on the CD)?

By the way, does the whole line of Geforce cards work with SFC or just certain ones?  Also do they work well with AMD Athalon or does it matter?

Ok  here goes.....  I have  uninstalled  the game and deleted any and all files to do with SFC3,changed screen size settings from 800x600,1024x768 etc, upgraded system to direct X 9,closed all running programs except systray and explorer and still freeze up.  I cant find any updated drivers for this Radeon VE since it is outdated, dont know if it would help anyway.   I load SFC3 and say no to installing direct x 8.1,apply beta patch and install mods as directed on all readme files....still the same freeze ups. The only time it really freezes is in the gameplay missions, refitting, moving on the map etc are all fine.   But my guess is the game hates this Radeon card.  Thank you to all that have replied and the help you have given. Ill keep trying even if I have to get a Geforce...........peace all  !!!!

I Haven't Had Much Problems With SFC3 with or without Mods... Sometime a Handling Error Of Netr.Dll.
One I Don't Play On Dynaverse... Hate The Campaigns. I Tryied With Dom Wars and Got Bored Real quick.
So I Play Skimishes VIA GSA. If The Game Starts To Glitch Alot, Typically A Reset Will Fix the Problem Normally.
I Lost Sound A Couple time, That Required A Re-install to Fix.

My System Was Custom Build By Me For Me. I Need To Upgrade Here Soon.
Althon 1800+ XP (overclocked To 1.62 GHz)
Radeon 7500  DDR 64mb (Currently Using Catalyse 3.7 Drivers, Because Homeworld 2 Kept Crashing WIth 3.8)
SB Live! X-Gamer
1GB Of PC2100 DDR RAM

Other Then The NetR.dll Handing Error From Time To Time, I'll Not Had A Problem.

Geforce GPUs Are Great For Gaming... But I Perfer The ATi Radeons Because Their Non Gaming Features.
