ST: PHASE 2 Variant...Has anyone Done This ship???
« on: October 29, 2003, 09:12:08 am »
Ok I was wondering if anyone has done this EXACT ship???
It is a lower(as in height)  wider USS Enterprise...
Also Please Look at the Details closely...I know that there are a few Phase 2 variants floating
around...But not like this...not with these proportions or Details...As far as I know

And in color(kinda)

If not would someone be willing to attempt this(I can do the mesh if needed...I am sure it would have to be Tweaked
But I can do it) or just do it on there own???
Thanks Guys!!!

Hey Azel!

I've wondered about this varient too, but have never seen other than those pics.

I can think of two candidates to make it though...WillardDcker and WickedZombie are likely ones (not to put words in their mouths).

Hey, you know what, I _Mudd WOULD be the guy to do it. I've got his models and with his unique style, his rendition would be excellent I'm sure.

You reading this, I_Mudd?

You guys...

Y'know, I had several Spiderman and Godzilla comic books that had that ad on the back cover, and I never understood why it looked different from the ship in the movie. Back then, I never considered it to be a big deal, but after I glanced at this thread earlier today, it struck me that that could really be a fun mod to build.

Then I waltz into this thread tonight and hear Atolm chanting my name to build this thing. I'm flattered and accepting the challange, as it seems just non-canon enough to fit in my world.

But...

(there's always one.)

... I got to put some really sweet designs on the backburner to get to this. I might have to burn some midnight oil. I might really enjoy doing both of those things, because this ship rocks.

My next post in this thread will be a WIP shot, something I don't normally like doing, but I promise not to bite anyone's head off or get mad and run away if anyone's got any suggestions

See ya soon;

I_Mudd.

we need to get the other "phaser 2" vessel 2, the one seen in some spacedock seen. It's a rather ugly ship, but I don't believe it's ever been done.

I spent about 4 hours studying the pictures and doing drawings of her. I really wish there were different angles to look at, but this is forcing me to make "Trekeducated" guesses, which is part of the fun.

I fought to try and get the angle right, but didn't hit the mark on that.  So sleepy ...

Anyways, this is where I am so far ...

Got a little ways to go yet, but, I'm tired and need to sleep so I can go to work tomarrow.

It matches something on the ship. ALmost looks like either a large window or light. Unless it's a torpedo tube, but I wouldn't think it'd have blue or white light in it.

Hiya Mr Mudd

Just by taking a look at the posted design I'd say that probably you need to lower the sensor dome dip thingy on the bottom of the saucer a wee bit and maybe perhaps round off the engineering hull, possibly making the circumference a little bit smaller - just from looking at the pic!
But regardless of my observations I think it is a lovely mesh and is in no way a criticism! Thanks for devoting some of your sleep time to this!

Would be good to see some of those pictures of the phase 2 model in construction.  in the book star trek phase 2 and star trek new worlds would be helpful.

Excellent start, I_Mudd! Azel, myself and others certainly appreciate you putting in the time for this ship so soon!

Get some sleep, and look at her with a fresh set of eyes later.

And Azel, where'd you get that topmost picture of the Constitution Class - Phase II ?

Actually, not meaning to take away from this, but I think the proportions in the pics and the covers are the same, just seen at different angles. But, it's all in the perception, and the thought of a "shorter" Connie variant is interesting. Great job so far I_MUDD!!

Yeah it is interesting for a connie to be shorter in hieght
...I have looked at every Connie Toy / model replica, and mesh...none get that perspective...so yeah the ship is smaller

Thanks, Azel!

It really struck me as being a page from Starfleet Museum that I had never seen before. It would certainly fit the site's design scheme.

Did some more Digging...Found these:
I do not know how acurate these pics (seeing as the time period in which these versions of the Enterprise were involved in was like a dime a dozen...lol )are to the Very first ones I posted but its something to help

That Last image is from the Book "Ships of the Starfleet" if I am not mistaken...And is more of a Hybridized design of the TMP connie and our Phase 2 Connie

No, the one by Stress and Anduril is different form this one. Stres and Anduril's ship is more akin to the SoSF version, but the one at the start of this thread is an even more earlier version, of which only a few paintings were done......I call it the "back of the Marvel comic book Enterprise".

You are Right Atra!!!
Thanks for pointing that out.
When that painting/poster was produced, Paramount had already had the Enterprise as a Transitional project...they had already turned down (The Awesomely radical) Ralph McQuarry Designs(there where countless sketches and 2 more finalized models that are  Canon ships as they where seen in ST3 and various TNG reckage shots)...and Then they Had went back to Matt Jefferies to design this and other shapes...then they went to Andy Probert to finalize the designs...I think

Damn talk about alot of Variants on the theme...lol

Anduril and I did ours according to those very blue prints from the book "phase II the lost series" you posted, and the Incomplete Phase 2 series studio model. Also the bridge displays from ST:TWOK show the Enterprise in its "Phase 2" configuration, but i didnt see some of the later images, and there wasnt much else to go on for reference so we "filled in the gaps". i put some things on there that probobly aint supposed to be there, and what not, and took some artistic licence with others. like the texture scheme as you can see from the screenshot. this model was made in 2001, maybe its time to update it

Hey all, just thought I'd post another WIP shot, if anyone's still interested ...

Thanks to Bernard G. for the extra reference pics in my email and for all the ones from various folks here in this thread.

Almost ready for texturing! I hope I have time this weekend, (as once again, work rears it's unforgiving head.)

Yeah, what he said!

Hey, you think it would be possible to do a little tutorial on how to make the TMP nacelles? I try, but they always look bad...like my little friend here, I'm hitting a wall on thosethings.

And hey, you are not allowed to use language like that in here. (the word work )

I'm my own worst critic, which is why I don't normally mess with WIP posts. Usually, there's very little anyone can mention that I haven't agonized over, ( I'm as nitpicky and anal as a Star Trek fan can come, but sometimes you just got to let it go ... ) but all feedback is always welcome.

Having said that, I really hated the last two pics I posted. The model just wasn't matching the posted and emailed pics close enough. So many little inconsistancies from picture to picture were driving me nuts, such as the artistic license the artist of the paintings took with foreshortening. This project has been a good thing for me thus far, in making me call closer attention to details and finding the best compromises of visions to produce a satisfactory model.

I also feel I'm slightly out of my comfort zone of TOS. I dig the TMP style, don't get me wrong, I simply prefer the classic look of the original series. This particular ship definately bridges the gap, IMHO.

I'm much happier with this third new mesh. It seems to be the harmonious balance  of all the aforementioned pics. She really developed a look of her own as I tried to match up to the references, rather than going on based on what I thought she should look like. I now feel ready to texture this mesh, although I may not be able to dedicate time for this until mid-week.

It's coming along really well. There's just one thing that doesn't quite look right to me: the engineering hull looks a bit short and stubby. Athough I suspect you may have done that to make it match the painting as closely as possible when viewed fromm that angle. Am I right? Anyway regardless it's lookin totally rad. Keep up the good work.

You hit it right on the nose, Desty.
But keep in mind - angles, plural. I have several pics not posted here of the same ship. As I said before, this was the best compromise of all the pics at my disposal ( again, Thanks Azel and Bernard! BIG help.).

Glad ya like her; look for her sometime next week for DL.
