Tips on being Lryan anyone? the tri monthly on topic post..
« on: October 26, 2003, 10:34:41 pm »
as you remeber I mostly flew the wonder ships of the Federation, but im now tying new races, to breath more fun into playing this game.

i tried Rom as you remember, but as with my dabblings with the Gorn, I really dont like Plasma weapons..

now as you guessed by the thead header, I am now trying the Kitties.

my first question as a novice at this race is:

whats the deal with ESG

2nd question ive been told by others I would fly a Lyran ship like a Klingon, sabering, keeping out of range of the other ship, and doing the old death by a thousand paper cuts.

all tips welcome.

Er, sabering isnt too effective as you will mostlikely only have 1 or 2 dizzy's to sabre with at a given time.

Lyran is a hard race to get, but its killer once you know the ins and outs.

Its late, so Ill have to save all the good jucy information for tomorrow (actualy C&P alot from the lyran Forums since im a newb lyran and dont really fly too well yet )

You can either saber or knife it out.
Lyrans do have a higher than average shuttle launch rate, so-so power with the Powerpack refit and killer centerline punch.

One thing you can do is saber till you see an opening, then pounce.
Another: Get it, stay in, and try to spread the damage evenly to yourself.
Depends on your style.

Saberdance until your opponent starts to run (a huge mistake against Lyran). You're now in great shape for a vicious attack. Your ESGs are full, your shuttle bay has 50 points of suicides, and your phasers can all fire on the centerline. Turn off disruptors. This leaves you with plenty of power to overrun (or maintain a speed 31 chase) while charging phasers and a modest repel tractor. You have obscene firepower at top speed with no holding cost. Your opponent will likely lob some slow missiles (easily avoided) or Plas-F (gladly taken on #3 or #5 shields) at you. It is only a matter of time before their rear shield cracks and you Mizia them to death or he predictably HETs. Your ESGs can't be weaseled and your repel should allow a massive range zero strike. If they're a plasma ship watch their speed carefully, you can tell they are HET'ing when their speed drops slightly. You can probably drop a WW in time if they have 2 Plas-S or more, otherwise just eat it on the #2 or #6 and then maul them.

Look at the CWLP's centerline pounce:

8 Ph-1
2 Ph3
2 ESG
2 Suicides

Avg damage at Range 0 is 150! The BCPP is even nastier, at about 203.

Do that twice and almost anything is dead. That's my goal as Lyran: just do two massive volleys. The rest of the game is spent setting them up, trickle recharging after the first strike, and spreading retaliation on multiple shields with a good ECM advantage if possible. Of course a smart opponent will not flee from a Lyran. It is hopeless. He will starcastle or move at moderate speeds, taking your ESGs out of the equation for a while.
