A saucer tutorial so easy even I can understand it

lol

http://www.armadafleetcommand.com/~addf/Tutorials/saucer/saucertut.htm

Should be able to make some decent starbases out of that too.

One thing I might add to that is after you've created the saucer, you might want to run it through the "optimize" function to reduce the polies, which will probably end up knocking off 400+ polies off.

Also, if you kept the slice number low to help with the poly count, you can chamfer the edge to make it look rounder. Select the line button in the modifier panel, then select a vertical line on the saucer rim...select chamfer in the modify panel and experiment with different values until you get the shape you want. You can get a nice round saucer with a low poly count this way.

Yeah, maybe, but you'll change your tune as soon as you get it.   There is so much more you can do with it...hell, I "discover" something new with each model.

You know, sounds a little like you have Max envy.

still yur the last person I would think of for not knowing how to make a saucer.

Speaking of which, I am going to ive this a shot, and make me a starbase.

I can find the optimiser but where did they stick the chamfer button?

I did however manage to make something stupid (rather a blob with a starbase like lip under it) but who cares. Now that I know I can make one I'll worry about building something that isn't pointless crap.

Another question. Lets say I'm amking segments in my line, and I f*** it up, I want to remove my last segment. Undo seems to remove the whole line, instead of one segment. How do I do that?

I don't worry about slight mistakes when creating the spline.  Once the spline is closed you can move/add/delete vertices to make the shape right. I usually don't make the base spline with more than 10-12 vertices  because once the spline is closed you can zoom in and make your adjustments.

If I intend to make a space station with this it's going to take a hell of alot more than 10 or 12 verticies. That's why I was curious how I edit a given section, or beak the spline in the middle..ect.

have it, Prefer Milk. personal choice, like building the entire shape without features like lathe. Gives me a better feel for ship design. Anyway I used to always get told"you need Max, you need Max, gotta have max" Well no I don't  . Working with Milk is more hands on, like modeling clay with your hands, while Max is more like pouring plaster into a mold.

The biggest thing with software is learning how to use it. I submit that Milkshape can make any shape Max can, its just done using a different approach. I have the feeling that lots of people have to have Max simply because its the most expensive.
So a bit of bragging rights go along with having the most expensive thing, weather its a car, a house or software.
Max is also the industry standerd, probabably in part because its the most expensive and artists demand that they have it available. If I were using this forum to show case models for possible employment in the field, I would likely use max.
Anyway I think its highly unlikely that a gaming company would hire a modeler out of a forum.

If I were ever required to have a ship in Max format. I would build it in Milkshape and import it into Max as a mod file. Then save it as a max file.

I too discover something new on each model I make. Software does not make better models. Modelers do.

Perhaps I should not have called max gay, however when I enetered this forum a year ago. My models were called a whole lot of things worse then that.  All it did was motivate me to improve my skills.  And all the name calling was done by Max users, so I vow to one day make a better model using Milk and PSP than what is done in Max and PS

I have only been at this for 1 year. So give me 3 more years and I will blow max users away

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

C'mon James, don't get huffy. Seriously, the main reason I got max, was at the time there was no import/export to mod from MS3D, and I figured that it would be easier to have max than doing the whole conversion thing. The learning curve for max is longer I agree. Plus, I'm too impatient to try and figure things out for myself...more tuts for max. We all had our 1st models called names...but now it's all good.

And what's with the double post, you goof! Forgive me, I'm still a little loopy...woke up with a raging migraine and it always leaves me felling weird. Please, no offense has been intended.

The other thing about max and its cost that should be taken into acount is that its not only for modeling

lol, all I wanted James to do was stop calling it gay as though it was an insult, it p*sses me off!

I use Max and PSP - I would not like to have to use Milkshape nor Photoshop - so I must be a hybrid - but I texture people's model from Milkshape fine so big deal.
