OP Help.
« on: October 14, 2003, 06:13:54 pm »
Hello All,

New here - just bought Starfleet Command 3 and Orion Pirates. SFC3 isn't working out for me (I have an ATI Radeon 9700 card with the newest drivers - 3.8 - and the weapons, shield, and turn displays do not show on the screen). But no problem - I'll just play OP... but now here's the problem. In the setup utility I select Primary Display Driver and select 1280x1024. But when I launch the game I only get 800x600. Any clues, hints, or just meandering comments?

Systems Specs:

pentium 4 3.0
abit  IT7-MAX2 V2.0
512 ram
ATI Radeon 9700 3.8 drivers
using onboard sound on the abit
2X120 gig SATA drives
Windows XP sp1
Directx 9.0b

Thanks in advance!

probably have to manually switch it in the sfc.ini I would imagine.  Seems like I remember there being a problem with that.  I personally leave it at 800x600 because I can't stand the small campaign screens with all the black area around the sides.  I like my screens to actually fill the screen.  There should be a document floating around here somewhere that would give you the exact number to put in the SFC.ini file so that it switches the resolution to the one you want.

You could try KhoroMags EZ.INI. It gives you display settings and lots of other choices to customize both EAW and OP. You can download it from here,  http://www.xenocorp.net/Fleets_Guilds/Starfleet_Command/starfleet_Command.html   . Or any of the other fleet sites found in this forum.

You can go to my web site on this page

http://www.nightsoftware.com/effhq/scr2.html

and download EZINI from the Khoromag Patch Team.. just select the resolution that you want to use.. and click save.. it also allows you to set Multiplayer in Gamespy Arcade to non viewavle on opponent BPV selection and race, volley info.. and turn on / off saved game movies...

Also, before changing your resolution, you may want to consider patching your game and some fan created mods such as OP + Shiplist 3.1 and the EAW to OP mission conversion pack.... and the Sulu Bonus Missions....

i have a patch page set up for OP that contains the latest OP Patch and a patching process instructions.. plus a recommended Mod Upgrade for OP that will leave you 90% ready for any Dynaverse campaign.....

this page can be found on this page of my web site :

http://www.nightsoftware.com/effhq/sfcop2.html

Plus to get SFC 3 working with your ATI Radeon card, you may want to consider the 3.6 catalist or the 2.6 catalist drivers.. or just going with a NVidia Geforce FX vid card..

no driver complaints about Nvidia yet as far as i know. The 5900 Ultra with 256 Mb DDR Mem is listed by 14 benchmark companies as being the best card on the market since it creates and utilizes a new advance in OpenGL and Direct X..... without driver issues (drivers are all WHQL Certified and tested on over 300 games before release)

the 2.6 catalist drivers run SFC 3 without error, however your other games may not work correctly with that driver.. several have stated it takes at least 5 drivers resident on their machines to run 10 games, swapping drivers as game play requires... Others have stated no problems with their drivers.. so the issue is up in the air on the Radeon cards... There are 3rd party (fan created) Radeon Drivers that are the latest drivers hacked and editied to where they work flawlessly for all games while utilizing all the features of the Radeon card.. however, those drivers are not supported and may damage your vid card... If I were ATI, I would hire these 3rd party people to create the official drivers since their inhouse people can't get theOfficial one's to work correctly on most machines...

Most gaming companies use the NVidia Geforce for their game creation and test bed. I;m not sure what type of Vid Card Taldren uses inhouse for testing games and patches.. but i know that when they do contests, they give away Geforce based vid cards and several Taldren Employees over the years have made several mentions of the Geforce cards.... so it stands to reason that most if not all of Taldren's in house systems are running NVidia Geforce on their machines... and if this is true, then it stands to reason that Radeon users will experience some glitches / problems due to how the game was created and under the features / archetecture the drivers utilize when the game was coded... But this is just guess work.. but it makes the most logical sence.

hope that this info helps..

Thanks EZINI did the trick for SFC-OP. And the 3.6 drivers were perfect for SFC 3. Thanks for the advice on the ATI Card - I always used NVDIA up until now. I just wanted to try something different. So far it has been a great card - SFC3 was the first problem I have ever had with it. I had to replace the last NVIDIA card I had as it wouldn't play DVD's. All DVD software thought it had some sort of TV out port open and copy protection wouldn' t let the DVDs play.

Thanks again everyone for all your help!

Does anyone play SFC2 or 3 online anymore? If so where?

Well for 1 on 1 action in skirmish mode (actually up to 6 players) you can go to Gamespy Arcade (set-up included on SFC 3 game disk)...

For Dynaverse 2.. (multiplayer Dynaverse much like Single player only with / against other players) You need to get the appropriate patches, then click the multiplayer game  in game, then click on Dynaverse button in top left window (SFC 2 : EAW and SFC 2 : OP only)

For SFC 3, you can either choose patched game or unpatched game (whichever you use) and just click Myltiplayer Campaign on the selection window and it should take you in to the Dynaverse sign in page.. just follow on screen instructions...   For Skirmish 1 vs 1 games against others (up to 6 players), again GameSpy Arcade.. just choose the SFC 3 Game lobby...

for the latest patches, you can go to my web site at :

http://www.nightsoftware.com/effhq/home3.html

and click on the game icon on the left for the game you want to get up to current version, plus the bonus missions, plus recommendations on downloads to make the games more enjoyable online and in single player....

hope that this information helps
