I second that, even a writen tutorial would be great. I find very difficult to make a texture from scratch.
I īve tried using some renders from the differents parts of the ship I wanted to make and then modify/detail this files, but there must be a better way...!!!!

Please...

TUTORIAL, TUTORIAL, TUTORIAL!!!! You must do a tut for us lowly peons...please!! I still try to figure out what you did on my Cherokee, and think "Man! I'd give my left nut to texture that good!" If not a video tut, then at least a written one...hell, do it up in html and I'll put it up at my site. Only needs to be one aspect...probably the saucer. Most of what would need to be learned for the whole ship can be taught on the saucer.

PRETTY PLEASE WITH G'AGH ON TOP!?!

Hmm, a video tutorial isn't really practical as I texture in a very sporadic fashion, and although you would definitely see exactly how I did something, sometimes it's more luck than judgement!
However I can definitely do an illustrated written tutorial, maybe even with some sample files and stuff if that would be of any use to you guys.

As for Berman...well as much as I would LOVE to work for Star Trek designing ships(And of course working with Smiley on them ), I have never gotten a response to my queries other than,"Your work is good, but Sorry we are a full house now, and are not looking for anyone new.", or they want schooling in the Arts...as for me I  study the sciences, and  am too far along in the sciences to go an start over now(silly me...I thought that it would be better to go to school to learn something that can be acually weighed with grades...Art to me is just too arbortrary and cannot be a graded aspect of life)

The thing is. Game companies have requirements and restrictions regarding poly counts. ie: SFC3 had a 1000 poligon limit per model with exception of the Borg cube (1500). They also limit the size and number of bitmaps.  Modelers in the forum ships look better largely because they are higher poly and use multiple bitmaps. This may be partly why they are suggesting schooling where you would learn how to make lower poly models. Plus if they have other modelers and they all have met school requirements, it would then be odd for them to hire someone without them. Not too mention that it would be easier to communicate with modelers using max if you are familiar with all operations and terminology max uses.

Your stating that you are going to school for science also implies that that is more important to you.  If you are serious about a career in 3d you might want to consider formal training in the software that gamers are using. It might be only a 1 year program that is necessary, which perhaps you could squeeze in between your other courses.

Somehow I doubt a modeler would need to go to school to make their ships less detailed as everyone starts out making low res ships. It's kinda like sending someone to learn how to crawl even though that's the first thing they did as a baby (well, next to crying for their pacifier). This isn't exactly a 'set in stone' art form where once you make something it can't be changed or undone. Making a 1000 polygon model is damned easy - you just have to model the basic shape of the object and then modify it accordingly. If you go over the set limit, you can just chop off more parts.

I was not reffering to Video games man
I was talking about designing starships for Paramount...or another place ILM etc...I am a conceptual designer...it is what I do...if some says "hey I need a monster/ship for a film", I am your man...If you want something that you have never seen before(please excuse my ill-modesty here guys...sorry) I am your man.
I study science because it is what i like..Art is however my life..I didn't persue it in college because it was less important to me...but because I cannot stand art classes.  Unless I am being payed I will not be told what to draw, sculpt or paint anything and be judged on it if I am not in the mood(if that makes sense).
I use science in My art...iT has helped me in Far more and many ways man...

But thanks for the comment

It may just be the standerd. Where schooling is required, not just for knowing all the terminology and techniques but also to see if you are serious enough to jump through some 'hoops' in order to realize your goal.

I  once took a basic art course in painting, It wasn't my major. We had an assignment and we were required to use a certain color. I used a different color, saying that art is expression and color should not be assigned.  I ended up with a C. The instructor felt that we needed the fundenmentals before we could express ourselves. I am not stating my beliefs on this subject. Just pointing out that a prospective hirer might be looking at things from a different perspective.  They may be looking for an artist that can follow rigid requirements. They may have an large say in what the finished product must look like and may not allow the artist to vary much from there required end product.  They may just have a school requirement and thats the bottom line. An artist could always learn from instuction regardless of how advanced there skills. If they feel they can not. Its probably that there ego has gotten too big.

This was posted before your last post Azel, Just after WZ45's. So it might seem that it doesn't fit your last comments, that is why. And I did not realize you were referring to strictly design so my bad there. Your designs definitely rock so best of luck in your effoerts along those lines.  I thought you were trying to get into 3d modeling.

You hit the nail on the head, James. I read  a magazine called "Computer Arts", an UK publication, and it has articles dealing with breaking into the business of graphic design etc. One of the main things to remember, is that when you are hired by a company, or freelancing, the client will provide a brief, explaining what they want; the mag even has demonstrations, where they send a brief to 3 or 4 artists, then they show the thought processes involved and the final outcome...usually completely different but still getting the message across.

Azel, for you I would say to stay freelance and design your stuff. You can sell original designs and artwork...it's just ST related stuff that is off limits. I know I would love to be able to do that myself, but I'm more technically sound that artistically. Show me a design and I can probably do a good job recreating it, but designing my own stuff...well let's just say the few I have done were baaadddd, really baaaddddd.

Thunderchild over at BCU wants to convert this to BC once it is done, is that ok with you Azel?
Also I was wondering; what's the history on this ship? The unusual nacelles that it has - is there any special reason for them to be shaped like this? I need some ideas so that I can texture them - I take it from the name that this has some connection to time travelling?

Yeah, a time travelling starship would be cool. Sounds like the premise of the next show, Star Trek: Tempest.

I know I've harped on this before, so snack me uip side the head if it feels good, but I think you and Azel are more than ready to take on the Titan Class from ussmiranda.com. Her primary hull looks somewhat like the Tempest, but the secondary hull and nacelles are more traditional. Just passing that along...(slinks away).

Considering that practically every ship in ST can Time Travel( with warp and a star), I don't know if Time travel would be the way to go(but I am always open to the possibity)...the warp pylons were designed to handle enormous stresses in HET(high enegy turns), and warp manuvers.
As for possible Transwarp , Slipstream, or even Space Folding..that maybe more fesable...I don't know
LOL

She's still looking awesome man

Argh! Because I didn't look at the cross section picture in the beginning it has all gone horribly wrong now that I try and match it up. It's creating mesh errors left, right and centre.

Ok, I have begun the new nacelle....I believe that I have more closely followed your plan and also the original mesh too. However, I did take a few liberties around the bussards -thought it needed a bit of detailing to make it more interesting when I texture it. I hpoe that these are better!

Hey thanks Azel, it's very reassuring to know that you still like her after I modified the mesh so much!
Of course I'll move on to finishing the Andor as soon as I have completed the textures on the Tempest
Then it's either on to doing the Defiant refit that you have very kindly posted a link to - or even maybe I'll build your Sentry before texturing the Defiant- I have to say that I really really love that Sentry design! And it's been a while since a made a mesh, don't want to get out of practice!

Duh, duh, duh, DUDE!!!

I'm stunned, simply stunned....(faints)

Thanks! I'm glad that you like it!

Just have to map the line of polies down the sides of the secondary hull, the bit underneath and then the bottom of the saucer and a few bits on the neck and then it will be done!

Glad you liked the Defiant...I tweaked the look alittle so more of my style for the 2000's that drawing was done

I wouldn't mind having a go at meshing the Sentry myself, if you don't mind me doing that Azel?

Righty-ho - drawing nearer to completion now - I'm a little fed up with some of the areas on the ship that I have started to texture but don't really feel right about!

For example, the bit that I've done on the neck with the large triangles looks completely wrong now that I've done it! Any ideas/pointers? Help at this stage would certainly speed things along a bit! :hint hint:

EDIT: D'Oh - forgot to add the picture! lol

Hmmm, how about instead of the triangles, try adding more of those blue windows that appear slightly below and to the right of them. Maybe enlarge them just a little and spread them out a bit?

I think I like them!!!
The only other thing I could drop in there instead or include with the black triangles would be Vents like the Excelsior class
BTW is that a quantum launcher in that dark area???
if it is you may want to swap that with either an auxillary deflector or sensor pallete(or just combo them as you hseem to have plenty of room in there next to the lonely blue light)
Or just at some photon torps launcher to the sides of that blue Quantum launcher

Thanks:)

BTW when you get to that rear Alcove under the ship...Can you add a Light Blue ambient light coming from inside there, Reminiscent of the Excelsior class in ST 6 closing sequence???

As for the Sentry By all means sir
I would have to be   to not let you

I have made the previous torpedo turret thingy into a auxillary deflector of sorts, but I was wondering if you would mind if I added a dedicated quantum pulse turret to the bottom of the aux deflector- Similar in style to that of the venerable Sovereign class's?

Once again, thankyou all

Hello Smiley!
no I am not Don...
Don't take offense here as I will be brief (I hate to type)
Ok I was looking over your posted picks and it looks as if the bottom of the saucer is far less detailed. Even though it is smooth like the top it seems to follow a different pattern to the textures, the sovereign is a different beast and doesn't quite fit here as the mold to use. I would lighten or fade the red around the phaser ring that dark colour makes it look toyish. The triangles on the side I would eother make as one rectangle with horazontal details, maybe a recessed area there, or make the top black with the bottom the same as the aztec pattern of the saucer with windows (give them a recessed look at the top). the black can be staight at the top and extend from the first triangle all the way to the engine pylons. the bottom will have a curved line fron the pylon all the way to the bottom of that first triangle. You can use the piece on the pylon as the line up maker for the work the triangle as the other.

Add flush vents to the bottom ofthe engines on the saucer. I would use that same pattern you use on the top of the saucer on the center lower part, the aztec with the lines through it just on a smaller scale. Lastly rap the thrusters on the saucer to the underside as well, Yes I know they can be a pain to line up but it adds great detail with out getting into tiny detail work.

No offense taken! Although I haven't even finished the bottom of the saucer, like so many things with me - I start something and move on to another thing; in this case I started that texture and went off to do another one because I wasn't happy with the way it was going and thought that if I could do something else then I might get some ideas/inspiration

Some of what you say I understand, but there are few bits that I can't visualise! Now I know now that you don't like to type but maybe you can draw me a picture? (Without me sounding too stupid!)

I'm working Friday 11:00-20:00 ao I don't know if I'll get much, if anything done - then it's off to a birthday party 40 odd miles away in Tewkesbury! Getting drunk on a boat...hmm sounds dangerous...lol, I'll be back...maybe!

I managed to get a few bits and pieces of the mesh done today, I've textured the qunatum torpedo turret that I added and I've changed the triangle bits on the sides...The RCS thrusters have been carier over to the bottom of the saucer, but I am going to redo the textures on the rest of the bottom of the saucer, so ignore that part!

Perhaps once I have exhausted the supply of Fed ships that require texturing, then I will move on to the Romulans!

I've finished the bridge, I'm quite pleased with how the dorsal surfaces of the ship are looking, although I think that I need to redo the pylon textures before it's finished, now - back to the ventral saucer texture! Hopefully I'll get some more done before we go off to the first showing of Matrix: Revolutions in Oxford tonight!

I have to agree if you look at the 3 rd pic down you will notice they don't seem to match to well, almost like you took them from another ship during a kit bash of two different modellers ships. Close but not quite. You might wantto think about running something like the hull bottom along them and spruce up the background Aztec again like the lower hulls.

The only other thing is the bottom of the warp engines looks plane than compared to the rest of the ship.

Yup a nit pick I know but you spent to much of your life on it now not to make it prefect. She is a beautiful ship as she is now, and considering what you did to the rest of her it would seem a shame not to have finish these last details.

For undetr the engine YES! definitily.

As for the pylons, if it were me doing it. I would use that texture you used for the background on the lower hull with the windows on it (minus the windows) as 4-5 retangles on the pylons.

So it would be the light gray backing as now the checkered layer over it in 4 or 5 retangles then the current one over that. maybe some kind of flush vents in the front and back like all the TMP ships have (Consititution II, Excelsior, and Sov)

Less is more only when you are in a dicussion with a short amount of time, because you push for Quality not quanty at that point. With textures less seems to be uneventful and more can definiatily look better especially if you can get more without looking cluttered (very difficult to do).

Not exactly what I was expecting but I do really like it! You have pulled it off nicily in my opinion so I would say it was done and done as a master piece (I look forward to stealing some textures off it)

Hehe, I'm very pleased to read your post Mon Capitain! I hope that it lives up to at least some of the kind words said in this thread

As for downloads....well I think that Azel should see the model first, as it is his ship. Once he's approved it then I'll see about posting a link - hopefully at good ol' Mackie's site.

At the moment it has about 9 1024x1024 textures, a few 512x1024s and a few more of smaller sizes! I'm not sure it would be practical to have so many high resolution textures in-game...!?
Bridge Commander maybe, but SFC...hmmm.....

What do you reckon? 2 versions, one high res and one lower one?

Textures of large size are more of a function of the video card. Anyone who plays the current FPS games out there will be able to handle that. all the Saucer sections textures I do are at 1024 x 1024 so they seem to work. Khalibans Enterprise was at 1024 x 1024 (4), 1024 x 512 (2), and rest 512 x 512 and that was out what 2 years ago? I would say release her at normal size and see how it goes or have a few ppl test it. I have a Geforce 4 Ti so I can handle the higher end one, but I don't know what everyone else uses. The main advantage of shrinking textures is it reduces the size in the file and makes it easier for older cards to handle (3,000 kb for a 1024 x 1024, but only 800 kb for 512 x 512) but it does reduce that details as well. It also depends on the DPI settings you did them at, if they are at 120 or so (or less) when you convert them move the resolution to 200+ and you might be able to save that detail without it blurring away on you.

So I would save the orginal make a copy and see were you are with DPIs' on the textures you might be able to shrink a few of those big ones. Any texture of the 1024 x 1024 size that doesn't have allot of detail can also be shruck down, the 1024 x 512 again depends what is on them and anything 512 x 512 and smaller doesn't matter. What I am worried about is the small details like the aztec you used that will almost disappear into a blur depending on the settings you started with.

I was wondering that myself- my processor is a Celeron 2GB, and I have 1GB of RAM, but I have a puny 32MB Radeon vid card... sometimes the processor will read the graphics the card won't, but sometimes neither will... so, maybe you could shrink some of the files, Smiley, to like 512x512.... that way ones that have weak cards like me can still see those awesome textures....

she looks fantastic, she really does Smiley- thank you for you dedication- we all appreciate it...

I personally would like to see some of the textures.  The textured ship looks really nice, but what would help me would to see just a few of the textures to give some ideas.  thus I could eventually start on the Romulan ship I have meshed.  It is a high poly ship with 3616 polys.  It needs a decent texture job to finish it.  I just need some inspiration and examples to strive toward.
