Yet Another Connie Variant Question...
« on: October 06, 2003, 02:19:21 pm »
Has anyone tackled the Constitution II variant?

Specifically, it's the one in the fan book, "Ships of the Star Fleet Volume One". The name on the hull is U.S.S. America. Some of the differences between it and the Enterprise Refit are the rear firing torpedo tubes, wider support nacelles, and slightly repositioned thrusters on the dorsal side...

The only picture I have is in the actual book. I'm sans a scanner otherwise I'd learn how to post it.

Anyone out there have this book and care to give it a go?

I hope you're reading this, WillardDcker.

There's actually a number of minor changes that would make it a reasonable subclass:

Additional hatches to the aft-dorsal part of the saucer
Pylons extended forward slightly
Boxier impulse assembly
Aft torpedo tube(s) - Most likely a single launcher going by the top and aft views
Rearrangement of the dorsal hull thrusters

Obviously nothing drastic but in terms of starship upgrades this one makes a lot of sense if it were to be developed during wartime, especially with the militaristic impulse redesign and additional torpedo launch capability.

That and the fact you probably haven't spent a thousand hours staring at Connie reference pics, screenshots, and schematics.

Thanks for posting the link, wanderer!

Comparing the Constitution Refit and the U.S.S. America will indeed require a very close eye for detail. As paraphrased from the book it came from, this class was the state-of-the-art, incorporating the latest tecnologies and adresed some of the perceived design flaws of its earlier incarnations. Many of the differences are very minor, like the wider support nacelles and repostioned dorsal thrusters, and some, like the rear firing torpedo and expanded impulse deck, are more obvious.

If someone were to tackle this particular Constitution, they really do have to be a stickler for accuracy.

I'm a little surprised it hasn't been done before, as it is the most advanced Constitution ever produced (according to Ships of the Star Fleet that is).

I was hoping it was just a matter of tweaking an existing model. One of the guys you mentioned or maybe WickedZombie or WillardDcker would volunteer their skills.

I like your TOS Excelsior BTW.
