Taldren: please address my humble MOD question.
« on: February 11, 2003, 07:58:36 am »
Taldren:

I would like to know one thing please. I want to make changes to item names in the GF files. As you know, we can currently modify everything about a GF file with the exception of two things:

1. The number of entries in the file.
2. The names of the entries in the file.

Will the ability or knowledge to change these two things be made available to the community please?

Thank you very sincerely for your consideration of this question that is very important to the SFC3 MOD community.

I asked about this one for a long time, but never got an answer on it.  I guess I just gave up on it.  I certainly hope there is a way, but I'm not holding my breath.

What .gf file are we talking about?

Server side, it can't be done.  Each entry is looked up by the server by name.  It is fundamentally a
change to server functionallity.

Or are you asking something else?  Model .gf files?

Thanks,

Dave

I'm pretty sure he is talking about the .gf's in the CommonSettings folder.  It would be nice to be able to create "prototype" weapons, shields, armor, warp cores, and etc.  Or to just rename and add some so the addition of extra spieces will be easier.

In the DefaultLoadOut.txt what does Spieces 8472 use as identification?  The Federation uses "Fed-Frigate".  Is it "8472-Frigate", "Species8472-Frigate", "Species 8472-Frigate", "Species-Frigate", or "Spe-Frigate"?  I'm only asking because all of the other races use their ShortEmpireName, the Federation doesn't.  The RaceNames.gf file has their full names and short names.

It seems like it would be easy to add races to this game but I keep running into walls.  So far all I really have been able to do was add an entry in the "List All Campains" screen.  It lacks a pic, ship library, and actual mission scripts.  It is possible to add a race ...right?  If not do you have an expansion pack planned?

Dave,

Once again, you flatter me with your attention, thank you very much.

What I mean exactly is that we currently cannot change the file entries in any Commonsettings GF files, such as WeaponItems.gf and ShieldItems.gf. I want to know if you folks at Big T will tell us how to make it so we can change the name of, say, the Polaron Torpedo to something else, like Phased Polaron Torpedo. Currently, if I go into the Commonsettings folder and open the WeaponItems.gf file, I can change the following:

What you can modify in WeaponItems.gf:

1. power to charge.
2. damage.
3. what race can use it.
4. mass.
5. cost in pp.
6. health (how much damage it can take).
7. the name of the string file entry (in strings.txt) that is the description of the weapon in loadout display.

Note that you can't change the NAME of the weapon. If I change  [POLARON_TORPEDO] to [PHASED POLARON TORPEDO] that weapon vanishes from the game. All I want to do is change item names like shield items and weapon items, and/or add new entries to the file with the new weapon or shield item names. It can't be that hard, I just don't know how to do it. Simply changing the text in the .gf file doesn't work.

Thanks again for taking the time to read my question Dave.

Ah, I was under the impression you were asking to add new lines as well.   Like the following

1 - Copy phaser1 data
2 - paste phaser1 data on new lines
3 - alter new pasted phaser1 data & change it's name
4 - Have both weapons show in list

This way you could create versions of weapons, like prototype Fed plasma.  Long range low intensity phasers (phaser12 or base mounted phaser with power level of a phaser 1?), etc.  This would so greaty expand the possabilities of what the game could be.

I did that. Whether it works or not depends on where in the file you paste it. Doing it more or less at random (well my first attempt was at the bottom, IIRC, the second up in the fed area) It worked one way but not the other. I have since replaced the file with the back up for unrelated problems, so I cannot check to see which way worked. I did not however, alter the weapon characteristics other than energy cost and damage amount parts.

Well, I know this.  I have copied and pasted a weapon right under the original, and altered it.  The weapon did not show up.  So, since you say it works only one way, I would guess it would have to be the other.  I'll give it a whirl when I get a chance.

I've been trying variations of this for the past few days and have had zero success. All I can do is modify the strings file to change the descriptions, and the in-game button text. If anyone has found a way to make this work, please let us know.
