Topic: Have Activision and Viacom settled their Legal differences,yet? (Read 2020 times)

Dear Taldren and August Ladies and Gentlemen of this Forum,Does anyone know the status of the Legal Battle between Activision and Viacom? Are they even close to settleing the legal differences between the two companies? After all,The sooner they reach a settlement,the sooner the S.F.C.III Official Patch will be Q&A'd by Activision and ready for us,the gaming public,to download. There are some rumours going around, see here.

It is possible something is happening given the fact that Activision is finishing the patches for EFII and SFC3. Only time will tell. Whatever happens I think Star Trek Gaming has been damaged a lot by what has gone on. It started off so well with great games like Armada and Elite Force under Activision.

So I'm interested........what category would SFC fall into? RTS? or Sim?

Also, this arrangement means that everyone has the rights to ALL trek eras but is only limited by what types of games they can make, i.e. FPS, RTS, Sim, console. This would mean that an "all eras" SFC would be possible.

If paramount wins, no one is going to want to do business with them again. If paramount loses, they're likely to pull out of the gaming industry. Either way we lose.

Taldren probably can't afford a Star Trek license in the near future, but I'd love to see them find a cheaper license. It may actually be better for marketing in the long run. Think about it: there are 10 Trek games on the shelf. SFC is just another trek game, and trek fandom has plenty to choose from. Now, imagine a B5 game. There aren't many B5 games out there, so B5 fans, while less numerous than Trek fans, are likely to jump all over it.

But then, that's just what I think. Taldren may not want to make an SFC-style game for a long time.

Considering that this is quite likely one of those legal cases where the lawyers, lawyers, lawyers will have lawyers it could be some time before there is any resolution.
