I'm guessing your using the Assimsoft plugins? If so, it should work. Did you set up the colors in the diffuse, spec, Ammbiant etc to "black"  for the ill. maps? The ill. maps should be in the lower box, reg. maps in the upper. After your done, the model should be almost invisible in Milkshape but will work fine in game.  Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replys. No I don't have assimsoft. I'll do a web search for it-thanks

edit-think I misunderstood. Yea I have a plugin. I have added I-maps in milk but they make no difference. I hadn't set the diffuse  and specular to black so I'll do that. Thanks again.

Well someone once told me that milkshape reads I-maps as transpariecies- I believe them  cause I am unable to produce any affect with them. PLus when they are applied the ship doesn't get transparent but disapears.

Illumination maps  "i bmps" are added in Max by selecting the self illumination button when you are on the particular material in the material editor.

In short form...Max is needed to add them.

James, follow the links to some pics of something I did real quick to show you it works in MS. These were imported into MS, i-maps removed and saved as a ms3d file. Then I opened it up, took it apart ,reapplied the maps (making the ship invisible in MS) and took these pics.

This is I believe is DD's BC conversion I got from SFCfiles.com.
Couple things to check, notice the "other glows" floating away from the ship. These are not from  i-maps, these are from the SFC 3 engine.

Do you have the latest plugin from Assimsoft? Don't use the ones from the UTME download, they are older and may or may not work. Download the plugins from www.Assimsoft.com

Hope this helps. Post more questions if yuo have em. I'll try my best to answer them.

You need to cut and paste to see the images.
